President Iohannis to attend High-Level Forum Africa-Europe

Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis will attend the High-Level Forum Africa-Europe in Vienna on December 17 and 18.

According to the Presidential Administration, the forum aims to strengthen the EU’s long-term partnership with the African continent and will focus on stimulating sustainable investment, job creation and advancing cooperation in the digital age. At the same time, it is designed to boost the involvement of the private sector and capitalise on the development opportunities offered by the African continent, especially in new technologies and digitalisation.

The EU member states, the African Union, European institutions, as well as international financial institutions will be represented at the Forum. Business representatives from both continents will be present, particularly of companies dealing with innovation, digitalisation and start-ups.

“President Klaus Iohannis will outline, sides the challenges that are common to the two continents, the multiple possibilities for dialogue and constructive areas of co-operation between Europe and Africa, both in terms of the relationships between the European Union and the African Union and between Romania and the states of Africa.”

Iohannis is expected to point out that Romania, as a country that will take over the six-month rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union on 1 January 2019, will continue to promote, in the spirit of the Vienna Forum, together with other EU partners, a dynamic and pragmatic dialogue with Africa and co-operative actions aimed at raising the level of trade and leading to job creation and new opportunities.

Iohannis will attend the High-Level Forum Africa-Europe at the invitation of Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, as senior representatives of the EU Council Presidency, the African Union Presidency, respectively.
