Iohannis meets Tusk, Sipila in Brussels: We expect successful collaboration during Romania’s EU Council Presidency

President Klaus Iohannis announced on Thursday that he had talks with European Council President Donald Tusk and Finland’s Premier Juha Sipila on Romania’s taking over the presidency of the EU Council, saying that our country is looking forward to having a successful collaboration with European partners during this mandate.

“A good meeting with the President of the European Council, Tusk and the Finnish Prime Minister, Juha Sipila, as Romania is preparing to take over the presidency of the EU Council. We look forward to having a successful collaboration with our partners and to working closely with Finland, which will take over the presidency [of EU Council] from us,” Iohannis announced in a message posted on Thursday on Twitter.

Prior to attending the European Council meeting, the head of state said he will have several meetings with European leaders.

“I have meetings with European leaders these two days, very important meetings. The main topic is obviously the presidency of the Council of the European Union, which we will take over from 1 January, but we also have other very important issues. We have difficult files in our presidency – Brexit (…), the Multi-Annual Financial Framework, migration and the Summit in Sibiu, which we want to prepare very well, because it will take place right before the European elections, and the European elections are a specificity of our presidency,” Iohannis said upon his arrival at the European Council meeting in Brussels.
