Emil Barbu Popescu, Ion Marin and Elise Stan, decorated by President Iohannis

President Klaus Iohannis on Monday decorated, during a ceremony that took place at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace, Professor Architect Emil Barbu Popescu, PhD, Master Ion Marin and TV producer Elise Stan, in which context he said that artists and their works offer the Romanian people the opportunity of presenting itself with dignity to the world.

“Tomorrow is the National Culture Day, when we celebrate all those who make arts shine. But we also celebrate culture everyday when we treasure freedom and diversity, two cardinal values, which have their most expressive manifestations in culture and they make humankind feel complete. The celebration of culture is done every day in the theaters, in the concert halls, in the bookshops or at the exhibitions when we see the works of art and we feel the joy in sharing with others. Year after year, on January 15, we celebrate all the artists who make this sublime connection between people, which crosses every border and is transmitted from generation to generation, possible. (…) Even if it takes its inspiration from identities and diversity, culture is the one that makes us feel closer. The artists and their works offer our people the opportunity of presenting itself to appear with dignity before the world, in a beneficial dialogue for both Romania and the universal civilisation,” President Iohannis stated at the Cotroceni Palace.

He also added that Elise Stan, Emil Barbu Popescu and Ion Marin are landmarks of performance in their fields.

“You are devoted to transmitting the cultural patrimony – to whose preservation and development you contribute – to the young people, students and pupils. Romanian cultural will benefit from the formation of the new generations as much as it will be the depository of your achievements in music and architecture. By handing these high distinctions of the Romanian state to you, I once more underscore the responsibility that you took to build the respect for values, the original creation and authentic patrimony in the society,” said the head of the state.

The Madrigal Choir performed two plays at the event.

On November 22, 2018, the head of the state signed the decrees on the decoration of Professor Architect Emil Barbu Popescu, PhD, with National Order “The Star of Romania” in rank of Knight, Master Ion Marin, director and composer, honorary director of the National Chamber Choir “Madrigal,” with the National Order “For Merit” in rank of Commander and the TV producer Elise Stan, with the National Order “For Merit” in rank of Knight.

President Iohannis bestowed the distinction upon Emil Barbu Popescu as a token of “appreciation for his exceptional professionalism proven in forming the new generations of architects, for his contribution to the promotion of the Romanian schools of architecture both in the country and abroad, for his remarkable works written in the atlas of the world architecture.”

The head of the state bestowed the distinction upon Ion Marin “as a token of high appreciation for his important contribution to the initiation and development of the first national social integration programme, through choir singing, in Romania, as well as for the promotion of the Romanian musical art abroad.”

Moreover, Elise Stan received the distinction as a token of “appreciation for her important role in promoting new talents from among the young artists, for her contribution to the discovery of valuable performers of popular music, folk musicians, for her talent in promoting the Romanian folklore, by which she maintained the flame of Romanian spirituality alive, she helped preserving the traditions and the national identity.”
