25 years of Automobile Bavaria

  • The largest network of BMW dealers in the Central and Eastern Europe continues the successful story of BMW in Romania, which started in 1994.
  • MHS Holding strengthens its market leader position in the Central and Eastern Europe


25 years after its foundation, Automobile Bavaria, the largest network of BMW and MINI dealers in the Central and Southeastern Europe, continues to be the market leader in the Romanian network of the BMW leaders, with an increase of 8% in the sales of new BMW vehicles, compared to 2017. In the 25 years of activity, Automobile Bavaria sold over 45,000 vehicles and more than 1,050,000 customers have visited the vehicle service stations authorized by BMW, MINI AND Rolls-Royce.

MHS Holding, the entity under whose name some of the largest networks of car dealers operate in Europe, registered a turnover of more than EUR 387 million in 2018, and a total increase of 14% in new car sales compared to the last year, which represents over 7,600 cars delivered at European level.MHS Truck & Bus, the MAN importer in Romania, registered an increase of 35% in the sales of new MAN trucks, compared to 2017, and a doubling in the number of service agreements.

All the MHS Holding companies (Automobile Bavaria, MHS Truck & Bus, Schmidt Automobile, Schmidt Premium Cars, MHS Motors and Bavaria Mobility), had a positive evolution in 2018, the total turnover amounting more than EUR 387 million.

In 2018, Automobile Bavaria registered an increase of 8% in the sales of BMW cars, registering a number of 1,622 deliveries, to which 206 new MINI units sold are added.

MHS Motors, the new Opel dealer in Targu Mures, sold 121 new cars in the first year since the official opening.

The sales of used cars performed by MHS Holding have seen a positive evolution, exceeding the threshold of 3,000 units delivered in Romania and Germany, which represents an increase of 15% compared to 2017.

The 12 Automobile Bavaria premises that are authorized by BMW and MINI were visited in 2018 by 56,154 cars, and the turnover in the BMW and MINI service area has seen an increase of EUR 4.5 million.


Schmidt Automobile – joint venture with Pappas Holding GmbH


“The year of 2019 brings a number of important changes and investments in the German network of BMW dealers. Last year, we have concluded a joint venture with Pappas Holding GmbH, one of the most powerful companies in the European automotive industry, with an annual turnover of EUR 1.5 billion, being present in 4 countries, through 40 dealers. The holding’s portfolio includes 20 car brands and registers annual sales of more than 35,000 units, having more than 2,800 employees. They have established who the new CEO of the company is, while I have appointed the new CFO.

In the end of 2018, we have launched the new BMW X5, one of the most successful models delivered by BMW in Romania in the 25 years of presence here. We are confident that the new generation will overcome the previous models in terms of sales performance.

Our main target in 2019 is to strengthen our leading position within the Romanian BMW network by continuing the investments in modernizing and implementing the latest BMW standards at the level of the car service station network, as well as launching the new BMW X7, BMW 3rd Series, BMW 7th Series models on the Romanian market”, explained the President of Automobile Bavaria Group, Michael Schmidt.

The BMW and MINI sales have increased in the Automobile Bavaria Group in 2018, and the targets set at the beginning of the year have been achieved.

In 2018, the Automobile Bavaria Group has delivered 1,622 new BMW cars and 206 new MINI cars to Romania. The segment of used cars represented by Bavaria Used within the Group, has exceeded 1,000 delivered units, which growth was supported by the premium services provided to customers. The attractive packages offered when buying a used vehicle, the certified history of the cars and the 24-month guarantee, as well as the flexibility of the financing services, had a significant contribution to the growth of this segment.

Last year, Automobile Bavaria Group has delivered important fleets for the BMW i and MINI brands, and for the BMW iPerformance models. In the end of 2018, Automobile Bavaria has delivered the largest BMW plug-in hybrid car fleet in Romania, amounting more than EUR 700,000, to the Teaha group of companies. The low cost of use, the engine efficiency, the low exhaust emissions and the attractive financing programs have generated an increased level of interest from customers.

MHS Motors, the Opel dealer inaugurated last year in Targu Mures, registered record sales, namely 121 units, in the first year since the opening.

Starting this year, the Group’s multi-brand operations will also include the first Volkswagen dealer.


The main directions for MHS Holding


“With more than 7,600 delivered cars, 2018 is one of the best years in the holding’s history. In this context, we have planned to make a number of strategic investments in order to strengthen the MHS Holding structure and dealer network, to diversify the added value services for customers.

The increase in the market share for the brands BMW and MINI, together with the investments in strategic projects, in the field of electric car segment, with a specific infrastructure, is part of our goals for 2019.

Starting from October 2018, all the Automobile Bavaria dealers have become BMWi authorized dealers. The authorization has involved the purchase of special equipment and the training of the specialized staff.

In 2019, we will focus on maintaining the positive evolution of the last years. We have budgeted an increase over the average of the market, supported by a mix of organic growth and regional expansion.

We appreciate that the used car segment has a growing potential which is similar to the one of the last years”, explained Georg Pfeffer, CEO at Automobile Bavaria.

Georg Pfeffer has been appointed as the CEO of Automobile Bavaria in the beginning of this year, having a wide experience of more than 25 years at the management level in the field of the automotive industry. He also worked so far at MHS Holding, at the management of the German BMW dealers and at Automobile Bavaria in the mid-2000s, when the Baneasa BMW showroom was launched.
