Former President Traian Basescu stated on Sunday evening for Romania TV that People’s Movement Party (PMP) will have its own candidate for this year’s presidential elections, and in the second round will support Klaus Iohannis. Asked if he will run in the EP elections, Basescu avoided to directly answer, saying he will do what is needed in order to support the party.
“Iohannis still maintains a balance as he can, he delays in appointing their people, he notifies the Constitutional Court, he is a sort of opposition to this assault represented by PSD and ALDE. On the other hand, I don’t want you to misunderstand me. PMP will have its own candidate in the first round, not me, because I can’t anymore. But in the second round I will definitely support Iohannis”, Basescu stated.
Asked if he will run in the EP elections, the former head of state didn’t give a direct answer, mentioning that he will do what is needed to support PMP and he will support the party during the electoral campaign.
“What I will do for sure is to support PMP in the electoral campaign. (…) There is still enough time, the voters are not concerned by the PMP list, they have hard lists from PSD, from PNL. Anyway, I will do whatever is needed to support the party, I will be their partner during the campaign. I will support them, because they are a pretty clean party, I’d say, compared to what’s on the public market right now. It’s a party that passed the threshold in all the elections since it was founded, I don’t see why it wouldn’t pass it now”, Traian Basescu added.
He also commented about the alliance between USR and PLUS, saying that USR was instructed to receive the party bought by Dacian Ciolos.
“If someone wants to convince me this was a political thinking, and not an influence from somewhere, don’t ask me from where, because I don’t know, but USR was definitely instructed to receive the party that was recently bought by Mr. Ciolos. It is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen in the alliance policy in Romania since the Revolution until today, I never thought such a thing could happen”, Traian Basescu also stated.
