The Social Democratic Party (PSD) will win the elections in Romania, while the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party) will win the elections in Spain, PSD President Liviu Dragnea stated in a speech given at the Congress of the Party of European Socialists (PES) in Madrid, pointing out that the Romanian Government has proved that “a Social Democratic government can lower taxes, can hike salaries, can hike pensions, can restore hope for youth.”
“In recent years, thanks to our government which has made all efforts to improve daily life, the minimum salary has grown by more than 50 percent in two years. Pensions have grown and will grow each year so that in 2020 basically no pension will be lower than double [its level] at the start of the mandate in 2017. Against the backdrop in which we have also lowered the taxes for citizens – the income tax and the taxes for the business environment; the right-wingers always told us that this is not possible, that we must not hike the pensions, that we must not hike the salaries, because there is no money,” Dragnea said in the speech he gave in Romanian after a brief introduction in English.
“We have showed that a Social Democratic government can lower taxes, can hike salaries, can hike pensions, can restore hope for youth. It was not easy, and it will not be easy from now on either,” the PSD leader added.
Liviu Dragnea emphasised that the stake of the European Parliament elections is huge. “We are talking about the future of Europe, about our future, mine, yours, our children’s, our parents’. Together with our sister parties from Europe, we Social Democrats must restore justice, build a new social contract for Europe and for all the citizens of Europe. I am absolutely convinced we can do it. The Social Democratic Party will win the elections in Romania, and I am convinced the PSOE will win the elections in Spain. I am convinced that the Romanians living in Spain have great expectations from you and you will not let them down. And I am convinced they will vote for you,” Dragnea added, receiving applause from a part of the audience.
He added that in order to attain all these objectives the Social Democrats must fight to the end for their values. “The defence of democracy, the defence of the rights of citizens, of a just and transparent system, these are the guiding lines for which we must fight together,” Dragnea added.
EU needs overhaul that only social democracy can generate
The European Union needs an overhaul that only social democracy can bring about, national leader of Romania’s Social Democratic Party (PSD), major at rule, Liviu Dragnea said at the convention of the Congress of the Party of European Socialists (PES) in Madrid on Friday, adding that the European Socialists need to restore justice, and right “the mistakes and abuses of the past.”
“Today, I had a very good and very interesting discussion with Sergey [Stanishev, PES president], with Frans [Timmermans, first vice-president of the European Commission and the PES candidate at the EU executive presidency], and Udo [Bullmann, floor leader in the European Parliament of the Socialists and Democrats] and I came up with solutions for better communication. For my part, from our part, there is openness and we hope for better communication and better co-operation,” Dragnea said in his speech, hinting at Frans Timmermans as a European senior official who has been one of the vocal critics of recent controversial amendments to Romania’s justice legislation.
“We must also restore justice, we must right the mistakes and abuses of the past, we must demonstrate to the right that we are better than them and that we are united in fending off their attacks. The right would like us to be divided anywhere in Europe. I believe we should not fall into this trap. The European Union needs an overhaul that only social democracy can bring, a change that only we, the attendees and our colleagues from all over Europe can bring about,” said Dragnea.
“We need a Europe that is closer to the people, a Europe in which every citizen feels that he or she has equal rights. We must not leave anyone behind anymore. It has been said that we do the politics of the many. We are on the good side, and regardless of the consequences we must fight to the end for our values. It’s time to make the change now together. It’s time!” Dragnea said in concluding his speech.
The PES Congress met in Madrid on Friday and Saturday to officially confirm the European Commission’s presidential candidate, Frans Timmermans, and pass an election manifesto in the run-up to the European Parliament elections in May 2019.
