Pro Romania Chairman Victor Ponta stated on Monday evening for Digi 24 that if he were President Klaus Iohannis, he would call for a referendum on the same day as the EP elections, because 26th of May has to be a moment when Romanians should be able to express themselves on the legitimacy of those who rule.
“If I were, but I’m not, President Iohannis, I would call for it (for a referendum – e.n.), yes. This year’s EP elections must mean more than 33 ladies and gentlemen whom we send to the European Parliament, they must be about the legitimacy to rule the country. Today, Mr. Dragnea says: I got 46% in 2016, I have the right to rule the country. We, at Pro Romania, say that perhaps the 46 percent was also for Ponta, or for Tudose, let’s see. If you get 46% again, good for you, but if you get 30%, or 25%, you can’t rule a country relying on this. Probably Mr. Iohannis, on May 26, in order to increase the presence at the polling stations, I don’t know, since I’m not his counselor, and in order to refer to legitimacy… Legitimacy is as follows – the question: ‘you want no criminals in public positions’, let’s define this, ‘cause if we consider that all those who have been charged are criminals, in the end Mrs. Kovesi is also a criminal, since she was charged. We’re not talking about sentenced people”, Ponta said.
The former PM said he doesn’t understand how a sentenced person cannot be a minister, but can be the third man in the state.
“Personally, I don’t understand, and I am in politics for 20 years, I don’t understand how a sentenced person cannot be a minister, the Minister for the Relationship with Parliament, the Culture Minister, but such a person can be the Speaker of the Deputies’ Chamber. I don’t get it, it doesn’t make any sense. If I don’t get it, an ordinary Romanian citizen can get it even less. Can you be the third man in the state this way?”, Ponta said.
“I don’t know what Mr. Iohannis will do, but I believe that 26th of May has to be a moment when Romanians should be able to express themselves on the legitimacy of those who rule”, the Pro Romania leader added.
Sources close to Cotroceni stated for G4Media.ro that President Klaus Iohannis started to work on the strategy for calling for a referendum on justice on the day of the EP elections.
Dan Barna stated on Sunday, at a press conference held at Constanta, that this referendum is more necessary than ever and the legitimacy of this action is given by the one million Romanians who have signed for the initiative “No More Criminals”.
What shall we do after Dragnea falls? I suggest that all those who are not in Dragnea’s team think that only together they can get out of this pit
Victor Ponta stated on Monday evening for Digi24 that he suggests that PNL, USR, ALDE and UDMR should think that only together, all those who are not in Dragnea’s team can get out of this pit into which he brought Romania.
“Right now, I don’t see a serious concern on what will happen when Dragnea falls. I’m not talking about inside PSD. Napalm was spread inside PSD. When Dragnea leaves, who will come? Dancila, Draghici? The rest of the political class and the newer parties that are coming, that are successful, the political stage will be more varied… Problem is: let’s think on what we should do after this. I don’t like PNL, PNL doesn’t like USR, USR doesn’t like ALDE, ALDE doesn’t like UDMR. I got it, we don’t like each other. But don’t you think that after Dragnea falls we have to see what we should do with this country? Right now, we are in a very deep pit, and if we don’t get out of there, it will be bad for all of us”, Ponta stated.
Asked about what his suggestion is, Victor Ponta answered: “I suggest that all those who are not in Dragnea’s team should think that they can get out of this pit only together. None of them can do it alone. (…) If the country was doing well, the pilot was changed. But we are falling down”.
Asked if he thinks to an electoral or post-electoral alliance, the former PM stated: “I think we are talking about government here. Right now, Romania’s problem is the lack of governing. (…) Right now, it seems to me that Mr. Dragnea doesn’t care if he loses the elections. It seems to me like he is concerned about what happens on April 15, when he has to go to hearing, and if a negative sentence will be delivered, they will pick him up from home. His second concern is to say: I took PSD, I keep them captive, and having them I shout at everybody and make them my enemies”.
