Orban and Iohannis met Tuesday, discussed referendum on the judiciary

National Liberal Party (PNL) President Ludovic Orban met President Klaus Iohannis on Tuesday, the two discussing the coordination of their strategy on the referendum that the Head of State wants held on the same day of the European Parliament elections, on May 26, political sources have stated for Mediafax.

The Liberal leader announced on Wednesday evening, on B1TV, that if Klaus Iohannis triggers such a demarche, the PNL will support the President’s action.

The Romanian President stated on Tuesday that he is almost determined to trigger a referendum for May 26, the date of the European Parliament elections, and that he is very intensely working on this alongside his team. The Head of State added that he wants the Romanian people “to clearly state whether they tolerate corruption or whether we must draw the line and say ‘enough.’”

Iohannis started having meetings with the Liberals as early as August last year, to coordinate the strategy for the presidential elections, their talks also touching upon other political topics of relevance. After meeting the President on August 2, Ludovic Orban stated that “between the PNL and the Romanian President there is a relationship of partnership, of collaboration. We consult each other on major topics, and we try to coordinate our positions.”

Likewise, on Saturday, the Head of State will take part in the TNL’s ‘Mircea Ionescu Quintus’ Awards Gala, which will take place in Sinaia, starting at 6 p.m. The event will also be attended by Ludovic Orban, local liberal leaders, and approximately 400 liberal youth from all over the country.

At the event, the National Liberal Youth (TNL) will confer upon President Klaus Iohannis the ‘Guarantor of Democracy’ award, deeming that his activity guarantees that the observance of the rule of law and the defence of democracy are essential values.
