Romania presented at the UN the expertise and the programs of assistance for Small Islands Developing States

The Permanent Representative of Romania to the UN, Ambassador Ion Jinga, together with the Director General of the Romanian Agency for International Development (RoAid), Cătălin Harnagea, presented at the meeting of the Steering Committee of the Partnership for Small Islands Developing States, which took place at the UN Headquarters in New York, Romania’s projects of assistance for development implemented by the RoAid in Small Islands Developing States in 2018, as well as prospective of cooperation with these countries in 2019.

In this context, it has been recalled the assistance Romania offered to Cuba for reconstruction after the hurricanes Irma and Maria, as well as 3 training programs implemented by RoAid for the countries in this category, namely: a program on Disaster Risk Reduction and Post-Disaster Reconstruction for CARICOM States; a regional training to combat cross border criminality and cybercrime, in partnerships with the Ministry of National Security of Jamaica; and a training course ForeignDiplo2018@IDR with 29 young diplomats participating from sub-Saharan Africa and Caribbean region.

It has been also underlined Romania’s contribution to post-disaster reconstruction processes in Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, and St. Kitts and Nevis.

The regional projects regarding the transfer of expertise in different areas of common interest will continue and diversify in 2019, with the aim to become a visiting card for Romania and a confirmation of Romania’s commitment towards partners in the small island developing states.
