President Iohannis advocates for granting of additional extension for UK’s withdrawal from EU

President Klaus Iohannis attended on Wednesday the extraordinary meeting of the European Council (Article 50) on the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, a context in which he advocated for the granting of a further extension for Brexit to allow ratification of the deal with the EU in the British Parliament, so that an orderly retreat of this country can take place to ensure certainty for citizens, businesses and the business community.

“The President of Romania has advocated for the granting of the additional extension so as to allow for the ratification of the agreement in the British Parliament in view of the need to have an orderly withdrawal that would ensure certainty for European citizens in the United Kingdom and the British in the EU but also for companies and the business environment,” the Presidential Administration informs in a press release.

The president has also expressed his support for a “comprehensive and ambitious” future partnership between the European Union and the UK, covering both economic and trade aspects, as well as security, defense and external relations issues.
