EPP Summit kicks off in Sibiu. Daul: We won’t allow socialist, ALDE Gov’t actions spoil Romania’s future

European democracy cannot exist without the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary, freedom and solidarity, on Thursday said in central Sibiu the Chairman of the European People’s Party (EPP), Joseph Daul.

We are in Sibiu also because we want to offer our support to President Iohannis, to Ludovic Orban and the EPP member party [PNL, ed. n.] in backing the rule of law and in the fight against corruption, and here I want to hail the courage and determination of the Romanians who took to the streets to manifest in the last years. (…) We won’t allow the actions of the socialist and ALDE (Alliance of Liberals and Democrats) spoil the future of Romania, because at the heart of this decision stay our European values, the EPP leader said at the joint press conference with President Klaus Iohannis, the PNL leader Ludovic Orban, and the EPP candidate for the position of European Commission president, Manfred Weber, organised at the ASTRA Museum of Sibiu, ahead of the EPP Summit.

Joseph Daul stressed that the independence of the judiciary is not a luxury, but a necessity.

Justice must be in the service of all Romanians and not the privileged ones. Democracy cannot operate without the independence of the judiciary. Romanians can count on us to promote these values that unite us all in Europe, Joseph Daul highlighted.

The EPP president added that on 26 May Romanians have to make two decisions related to the European Parliament and to the judiciary reform.

Iohannis: 30 years from communism fall, we bring Europe home, to Romania

President Klaus Iohannis on Thursday said that not randomly has he chosen May 9 to organise the European People’s Party and the European Union’s summits, but because this is Europe Day.

“Europe arrived in Romania. (…) It is a very special moment to open the EPP Summit only a few hours ahead of the Sibiu Summit. Firstly, we shall talk about what the EU means to each of us, about our common values, what we should do if we are to take further this successful project for the welfare and safety of our citizens. The choice of the day of 9 May – Europe Day is not at all random. I’ve chosen Europe Day for these two meetings – the EPP Summit and the EU Sibiu Summit, and since we are all Europeans, I congratulate you on Europe Day,” the Romanian president said.

According to him, so that decisions for the future can be made, one should also look back at the foundation of the European construction and the several benefits the Union has brought to its citizens.

“To Romania, the moment is historic and 30 years since the communism fall, we have brought Europe home, here, to Romania. The EPP leaders have played a paramount role in the construction of the EU, they have laid the foundation stone of this edifice and have understood that the place of the Central and East-European countries freed from communism is within the EU,” Klaus Iohannis stressed.

There are still political forces whose leaders want to be above law

There are still political forces whose leaders want to be above the law, who do not like it when the fundamental institutions of the rule of law are investigating and bringing to light corruption deeds, President Klaus Iohannis also said on Thursday in Sibiu.

He pointed out that “the defense of the rule of law has become a more and more common phrase in Europe” and the mission of the Member States is to explain to European citizens that this is not a question of political rhetoric, but one on which the everyday life of every European depends.”

“We have also witnessed in Romania an assault on the rule of law and other EU member states. There are still political forces whose leaders want to be above the law, who do not like it when fundamental institutions of the rule of law are investigating and bringing to light corruption deeds and the theft of public money, be they national or European. Defending the rule of law has become a phrase more and more common in Europe. It is our mission to explain to European citizens that this is not a matter of political rhetoric, but one on which the everyday life of every European depends. Simply put – if the rule of law is threatened, then every citizen stands to suffer, sooner or later. Romania is a profoundly European country and it will remain like this in the future and that is why the vote that you will give at the referendum matters. It is the vote – the referendum vote – for the European future of Romania,” the president pointed out.

PNL’s Orban: We will fight together with EPP partners to make sure Europe stays united

The National Liberal Party  will fight together with its EPP partners to make sure that Europe stays united, Liberal Chairman Ludovic Orban said in Sibiu on Thursday.

According to him, the EU Summit in Sibiu is key to the decisions that will be further taken at European level.

“PNL is committed, together with its EPP partners, to taking further the mission to build a democratic Europe, a developed Europe, a Europe that gives every citizen the chance to have a decent life, the chance to succeed in life. Although we have political forces, both in Romania and in other European countries, that challenge the European project, which are trying to gain political capital from an absurd war with EU institutions, with the EU (…), as far as we are concerned we will fight at the side of our EPP partners to make sure that Europe stays united, that Europe is a place where every EU citizen has a decent life, freedom, that his dignity is observed, and all those who hold public office regardless where – at local, county, national or European level – are at the service of the citizen,” Orban said at the EPP Summit.
