Huge PSD rally in Iasi, on day of EU Summit. Dragnea: This nation was pushed toward hatred and division

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) organized on Thursday a huge rally in Iasi despite calls from the Opposition and some NGOs for it to be cancelled because May 9 is Europe Day and the Summit of the European Union  taking place in Sibiu.

At the same time, more than 1,000 protesters gathered in several parts of the city, heckling PSD’s sympathisers.

The protesters carried placards reading “Thieves, thieves,” “PSD the red plague,” “You tools” and “Get out of Iasi.”

Dragnea: This nation was pushed toward hatred and division

PSD President Liviu Dragnea stated on Thursday, in Iasi, that Romanians are not of two kinds – good and bad –, contrary to what the Basescu and Iohannis regimes sought to create in the country. The PSD leader also accused that past regimes encouraged division.

“Patriotism is needed. Romania needs, now more than ever, what it lost during the Basescu and Iohannis regimes. We need patriots and a motherland, because our country forgot to be a motherland. This nation was pushed toward hatred and division. They made Romanians believe they are of two kinds. I will say it here. Romanians are not of two kinds – some good, others bad –, as Iohannis claims. Nobody has the right to divide them into camps,” Liviu Dragnea told party’s sympathisers gathered in Unirii Square.

“Europe is or new home”

SocDem leader also told theMay 9 rally in Iasi that Europe is the new home to Romanians, adding that Romania joining the European Union is the most precious political achievement.

He pointed out that Romania is indebted to Europe, but added that such debt should not be paid with “forced contracts and concessions, with ports and natural resources ceded out of political obedience, or by ceding sovereignty.”

“Europe is our new home. Today we are part of the civilised world of the European Union, which is our most precious political achievement. The West has helped us through modern history, we owe it one, but it is good for us to repay this debt in the right currency, in solidarity and respect, in fairness and reciprocity. We do not want to repay this debt with forced contracts and concessions, with ports and natural resources ceded out of political obedience, or by ceding sovereignty. I do not want us to allow some in Romania, who think themselves Europeans until becoming treacherous, to get Romania engaged on the trajectory of a colony that has surrendered with its leadership and its wealth. Romania is a sovereign state, an independent nation owing Europe a big debt of gratitude, but all the other calculations made by Iohannis and his people will face our vigilance, dignity and the pride of the people,” said Dragnea.

Rovana Plumb: Romania has the best governance programme of the last 20 years. That’s because we have a leader with a vision

Rovana Plumb, PSD candidate in the EP elections, stated   that Romania has the best governance programme of the last 20 years, a programme that reduces development gaps, and that is the case because PSD President Liviu Dragnea is a leader with a vision, who loves his country.

“For Romania, we have the best governance programme of the last 20 years, a programme that reduces development gaps and ensures better living standards for each Romanian, at the level of those in the European Union, and this is so thanks to the fact that we have a leader with a vision, a man who loves his country: our president, Liviu Dragnea,” Rovana Plumb told  the electoral rally in Iasi.
