National Liberal Party leader Ludovic Orban believes that the PSD is ready to resort to any kind of abuse and threat against citizens in order to prevent voters from freely expressing themselves at the May 26 referendum triggered by Klaus Iohannis.
Orban stated on Monday that what has been happening in Romania in recent days is scandalous and that the members of the Government have transformed state institutions into PSD’s fiefdoms.
“What has been happening in Romania in recent days is scandalous. The ruling power’s desperation that the referendum will be adopted and that they will not evade punishment as a result of the citizens’ votes have prompted them to transform state institutions into PSD fiefdoms and instruments of threat and blackmail against Romanian citizens. We have seen how tens of peaceful protesters were taken away in police vans by gendarmes in Topoloveni because Dragnea was in town and Dragnea had ordered them, via Carmen Dan, to detain the people who were freely and peacefully expressing their dissatisfaction with the ruling power. The Interior Minister has ended up threatening the Romanian citizens who have protested against the PSD, against Liviu Dragnea and against the current ruling power in Galati, Iasi and other cities,” Orban said.
He pointed out that the ruling power is doing everything it can so that only a small number of citizens find out about the referendum.
“We are in an unacceptable situation. The Standing Electoral Authority is yet to produce the public service announcement regarding the referendum triggered by President Iohannis. The National Audio-visual Council is yet to offer broadcasting time via a decision that is in line with the referendum law. The ruling power has tried to issue an emergency ordinance through which it tried to prevent the Romanian President from conveying messages in favour of the referendum in the media. Through the attempt to amend the legislation, they tried to determine each polling station president to ask citizens if they want to vote in the referendum, instituting an unprecedented procedure. Without the reaction of the PNL and the public opinion, they would probably have issued the emergency ordinance as planned,” Orban explained.
He claims he has information according to which county prefects and county council chairmen are trying to force PSD mayors to sit outside polling stations and ask citizens not to vote in the referendum, thus breaking the law.
Ludovic Orban believes that the PSD is ready to commit any abuse in order to prevent Romanians from expressing their position in the referendum triggered by President Klaus Iohannis.
“We are in a situation in which the PSD is ready to resort to any abuse, any threat, any blackmail to prevent Romanian citizens from freely expressing themselves at the referendum,” Orban added.
The PNL leader also announced that his party will launch on Tuesday the oprestefrauda.ro website which anyone can use to publicly post information regarding attempts to boycott or defraud the European Parliament elections or the referendum.
President Iohannis invited to PNL day on Friday
National Liberal Party (PNL) leader Ludovic Orban on Monday stated that President Klaus Iohannis is invited to participate in several events organised by the Liberals and also to celebrate this party’s day on Friday.
“We have several events where we invited the President. For instance, we have the day of the party on May 24, on Friday, and we invited the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, to attend. Moreover, the President is also set to go to various locations in the country, where he will most probably get involved in several actions alongside our colleagues,” said Orban, after the meeting of the Executive Bureau of the PNL, which took place at the headquarters of the party.
He also accused PSD (Social Democratic Party) of banning Liberals from honouring the memory of the Bratianu brothers in Florica.
“Something truly scandalous happened this year, something that has never happened before in the past 30 years. Traditionally, the PNL commemorates the memory of the Bratianu brothers and celebrates the day of the party, at the same time, at their home in Florica. For the first time in 30 years, PSD wants to prevent us, the Liberals, from honouring the memory of our forefathers. PSD wants to reinvent history, to confiscate these places that are full of history and had a decisive influence on the evolution of the Romanian nation. But no one can forbid us from honoring the history of our country. Even if you can ban us from going to Florica, we will commemorate the Bratianu brothers anyway and we will honour the great achievements of the PNL through our actions,” said Orban.
