Viorica Dancila nominated as PSD’s presidential candidate

On Tuesday, the Social Democrats nominated Viorica Dancla as the party’s presidential candidate.

Paul Stanescu and Dumitru Buzatu were the only ones to vote against the decision taken by the Social Democrats during the Standing National Bureau meeting. The decision will next be confirmed by the party’s Executive Committee.

Before the Social Democrats took the decision, Bucharest Mayor Gabriela Firea informed her National Standing Bureau colleagues that she withdraws her bid to win the party’s presidential nomination.

Gabriela Firea stated ahead of the Social Democrats’ meetings that she will respect her party colleagues’ decision regarding the nomination of the presidential candidate and that they will take responsibility for the outcome of the elections. She added that some colleagues considered her to be the better option in the elections.

At the same time, the Bucharest Mayor said that “love by force is impossible,” against the backdrop of a different presidential candidate being selected.

On Monday, the PSD leader met Calin Popescu Tariceanu and Victor Ponta, to discuss their support for the PSD’s presidential candidate. She announced that she will wait for an answer from the two political leaders until 3 August, when the PSD party congress is scheduled.
