Save Romania Union (USR) leader Dan Barna stated on Saturday, in Targu Mures, that Romania must overcome the ethnic cleavage that sees each person voting for their ethnicity. He believes that in Romania citizenship means more than belonging to a minority, it means belonging to a European country.
Present in Targu Mures to collect signatures in support for his presidential candidacy, the USR leader stated on Saturday that Romania must overcome the ethnic cleavage that sees each person voting for their ethnicity.
“I believe Romania should overcome this ethnic cleavage that sees each person voting for their ethnicity. Because, in fact, Romania is a European state, Romania is an open state, it’s a state in which citizenship means much more than belonging to one minority or another, it’s the element of being European in a European country,” Dan Barna said.
The USR-Plus’s presidential candidate added that in a civilised and educated country the ethnic issue must be overcome.
“This topic must be overcome, the young generations and the new generations are giving this example and, being present here, in Targu Mures, I encourage both Hungarians and Romanians to join the USR, to join PLUS, because we must in fact save and repair Romania. In a civilised, modern, educated Romania, in a Romania which, besides freedom, also brings well-being, the ethnic issue must be overcome, and I consider that it should no longer be of topicality,” Dan Barna added.

The spokeswoman of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), Hegedus Csilla, reacted on Saturday to the statement of the USR Chairman Dan Barna, according to which “the ethnic issue must be overcome”, and said that this issue must be solved, not overcome, which is the goal for which UDMR has worked so many years. “He is acting like baby, like someone who closes his eyes and simply doesn’t want to see the problems”, Hegedus Csilla stated.
“Today, at Targu Mures, Dan Barna stated that «the ethnic issue must be overcome». We believe it must not be overcome, but solved, and we aim at this and we are working on this for so many years”, Hegedus Csilla stated in a video message posted on UDMR’s Facebook page.
She said that Dan Barna is acting “like a baby” who doesn’t want to see the problems.
“He is acting like a baby, like someone who closes his eyes and simply doesn’t want to see the problems. I have only one question: what did he do in the recent years to solve this problem, not to overcome it?”, Hegedus Csilla added.
