Premier Viorica Dancila says that the leaders of the Opposition, headed by President Klaus Iohannis, chose either to ignore the PSD-proposed pact for the welfare of Romanians – through which the Social Democrats demand that the incomes of Romanians not be cut regardless of who comes to power – or to condition its signing on obtaining electoral advantages. Dancila believes that, lacking a governance programme, the Opposition’s only plan is that of taxation and cuts.
Dancila announced at the start of the Government meeting on Tuesday that the incomes of all Romanians have risen thanks to the measures adopted by the Executive.
“Through the measures we took, through involvement, courage and determination, the incomes of all Romanians have risen. Members of medical staffs, education system employees, construction workers, as well as workers in other sectors currently have incomes that are far more consistent than they were in 2016. We have substantially hiked the incomes of pensioners too. By raising the pension point in several stages, Romania’s seniors currently have pensions that have grown on average by 55 per cent compared to December 2016. While at the end of 2016 the average pension was 885 lei, at present it has reached 1,368 lei. I want us to continue on this road, because Romanians have the right to a better life that can only be ensured through the involvement of all decisionmakers,” Dancila said.
She pointed out that, for this reason, she proposed the pact for the welfare of Romanians, wanting a written guarantee that Romanians will no longer go through the experience of income cuts. Dancila said that the leaders of the Opposition, headed by Iohannis, chose to ignore this document.
“That is why, at the end of last week, I proposed the pact for the welfare of Romanians. I didn’t ask for much. I only asked for a written guarantee that Romanians will never again go through the experience of income cuts. Likewise, I asked for a minimum guarantee that the local business environment will not be suffocated by taxes but will continue to be backed in order to develop. Unfortunately, the leaders of the Opposition, headed by President Iohannis, chose either to ignore this document or to condition its signing on obtaining electoral advantages,” the Premier pointed out.
Viorica Dancila considers that Opposition politicians are not interested in the fate of Romanians and, lacking a governance programme, their only plan is that of taxation and cuts.
“These politicians have shown that they are not interested in the fate of the people, they have shown that they are not capable of making a gesture of normality for Romanians unless they stand to gain something from it. Or, worse, they have shown that, lacking a governance programme, their only plan is that of austerity, taxation and cuts. I’m firmly opposed to such an outlook and I once again thank those who understood that the welfare of Romanians is not negotiable and joined this commitment in the interest of the citizens. I once again call on all those who have the power to undertake [a commitment] to join us in this objective that must be mandatory for anyone who asks the citizens for their votes,” Viorica Dancila stated.
