Romania’s Foreign Affairs Ministry message on the Day of German Unity: 2019 has a special meaning for both Germany and Europe

On the occasion of the celebration of the Day of German Unity, it is our great honor to extend the warmest congratulations and best wishes to the people of the Federal Republic of Germany.

2019 has a special meaning for both Germany and Europe. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the symbol of division of Europe. Following this event, the whole Europe made important steps towards peace, unity, freedom, democracy and prosperity. The fall of the Berlin Wall and the Reunification of Germany are important achievements that put an end to an unjust and sad period, turning the German dream into a well-deserved reality and paving the way to a stronger European Union.

Over time, the very good and long-lasting relations between Germany and Romania have strengthened through our close collaboration on many different levels and areas. The open and constant political dialogue, the significant economic cooperation and the people-to-people contacts represent the real foundation of the Romanian-German relation. Germany has been, for several years now, our first economic partner and the third investor on the Romanian market, the German investments creating numerous jobs and providing valuable expertise.

Another important dimension of our bilateral cooperation is education. Germany has provided us with support in the field of dual education, a system that aims at better preparing the students to productively join the labour market, through developing the necessary skills required by the market, in line with the current economic trends.

Nevertheless, our countries are brought together by the German minority living in Romania and, at the same time, by the growing community of Romanians residing in Germany. An essential platform for our dialogue, the Romanian-German Governmental Committee for the ethnic Germans living in Romania reconvened this year, in Sibiu, to discuss projects meant to preserve and promote the cultural identity of the German minority. This year’s session brought forward the 100th celebration of the Mediaș Declaration of the German minority, which stated the will of the Transylvanian Saxons to become part of the united Romania. We are fully committed to continue the close cooperation between our countries to the benefit of our citizens.

Over the past year, as Romania undertook the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the close diplomatic relations of our countries have been further reinforced. At the European level, Germany has always been one of our closest partners. During the Romanian Presidency, we jointly worked towards enhancing the European integration and improving the degree of cohesion between Member States, while strengthening the role of the European Union as a global actor. Looking ahead to the 2020 German Presidency of the EU Council, we wish our German friends a successful mandate and pledge our full support for a stronger Union.

National Days represent important moments of reflection on past events. We believe they also constitute an excellent time to look forward towards creating a better future for our countries. Therefore, we stand determined to explore further opportunities to deepen our cooperation with Germany and to overcome together the global challenges.

Herzliche Glückwünsche zum Tag der Deutschen Einheit und einen schönen Feiertag!
