Iohannis says snap elections are possible: I will discuss this with PM Orban on Friday. PSD : Early elections represent the biggest electoral farce of the Liberals

President Klaus Iohannis said on Thursday that early elections are possible and that he will have a discussion on this topic, on Friday, at Cotroceni Palace, with Prime Minister Ludovic Orban.

“I think they are possible and I will get involved to promote the concept of early elections. Yes, I want early elections,” Iohannis said at the Cotroceni Palace, pointing out that the meeting with the prime minister will take place “before dinner”.

He was asked in case the PSD does not table a censure whether he would suggest to Prime Minister Ludovic Orban to resign.

“This is a matter that we have not discussed. It is obvious that in order to reach early elections, we know the constitutional provision, it is necessary for the Government to be ousted or to withdraw and after that two unsuccessful attempts are needed to form a new government. The censure motion is an obvious way to initiate this process. These issues I will discuss with the prime minister and others. Even tomorrow, here, at Cotroceni, I will have a discussion with Prime Minister Ludovic Orban and we will address these issues,” replied Iohannis, according to Agerpres.

“I am very pleased with the PNL Government and I recommend that a PNL government remain in office for a long time. I can tell you that I am very pleased with the way Ludovic Orban does his job as a prime minister. (…) I believe that Ludovic Orban is at this moment the best solution for prime minister, either full prime minister or interim premier,” he said.

The head of state added that he did not know of any discussion in the PNL regarding a possible hesitation of Ludovic Orban’s to resign as prime minister, because he fears he would not be appointed prime minister.

PSD: PNL’s intention regarding snap elections, biggest electoral fake

On the other hand, the Social Democrats (PSD) claim that snap elections represent “the biggest electoral farce, by which the PNL [National Liberal Party] is trying to avoid the consequences of annulling the pension and wage increases.”

“The PNL’s intention to call for snap elections before the date of September 1, 2020 represents the biggest electoral farce prepared by a political party after the Revolution of 1989. The statements in the last period of the PNL representatives indicate the fact that the real purpose of the early elections is to obtain the vote of citizens before the term where the Government should increase the pension point and the wages in education, according to the laws in force, adopted during the PSD government,” a release sent on Thursday to AGERPRES by the Social Democrats informs.

According to the PSD, “the only reason that explains the insistence regarding early elections is that thusly the PNL could obtain a blank check from the citizens, which would later allow it to annul the pension and wage increases without bearing the electoral cost of such a raise.”
