Foreign Affairs Minister Bogdan Aurescu met on Tuesday with US ambassador in Bucharest Adrian Zuckerman who handed the Romanian top diplomat a letter from the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a release quoted by Agerpres.
In the letter, Secretary Pompeo personally thanks the Romanian chief diplomat for Romania’s good cooperation via diplomatic channels, including through the Romanian Embassy in Washington and the Consulate General in Los Angeles, for the safe repatriation of the European citizens, Romanians included, aboard the ‘Grand Princess’ ship, the cited source informs.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo points out that this excellent cooperation, which took place under extremely complex conditions, reflects the solid friendship between Romania and the United States, as well as Romania’s valuable European and international contribution. In the context of the anniversary, this year, of 140 years of Romania-US diplomatic relations, the high American official also addressed Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu the invitation to visit Washington in early April, or as soon as possible, when the situation allows it.
Bogdan Aurescu said that the Romanian side wants to maintain as a priority, inasmuch as the current conditions allow it, the next session of the Romania – US Strategic Dialogue slated for the first part of the year in Washington. He also said he will do his best to follow the invitation from his American counterpart.
The two officials also discussed the special situation created by the COVID-19 epidemic and the exceptional measures taken at global level, as well as the challenges facing the states in this context.
Minister Aurescu stressed that, in these complex times, apart from the epidemic-related efforts, the strategic projects and foreign policy priorities capable of contributing to increasing the citizens’ security must be further kept in focus, and assured that the Romanian diplomacy continues its activity within normal parameters, while observing the specific conditions generated by the current situation.
The two officials also discussed defense and security cooperation and exchanged views on developments in the Republic of Moldova. They also reviewed the positive developments at the level of the Three Seas Initiative, also in the context of the recent announcement made by the US regarding the allocation of 1 billion US dollars for investments in energy projects under the Initiative. The sides agreed that Romania and the US should continue their close coordination for the efficient preparation of the upcoming Three Seas Initiative summit in Tallinn.
