Romanian War Veterans Day is marked this year by concrete actions in support of war veterans and widows amidst the restrictions taken to combat the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, according to a press statement released by the National Defence Ministry (MApN) on Wednesday.
Packages of strictly necessary food are frequently distributed to veterans with support from the Department for Relations with Parliament.
Also, war veterans and their widows without next of kin or other forms of direct assistance can call the toll-free 0800.410.990 line designed for reporting special situations in which they may find themselves.
Defence Minister Nicolae Ciuca also sent a message to the Romanian war veterans.
“You are our best example, models of military and civic behaviour, special people, strong characters, noble souls. You have done your duty to the country, it is our turn to take care of you,” Ciuca said in a message released by MApN.
War Veterans Day is celebrated on April 29, and it was created by government decree in 2007.
After WWII, Romania has reported over 900,000 of its nationals dead, missing, taken prisoners, wounded or disabled in war settings, including about 92,000 dead soldiers. According to MApN, there are currently still about 4,100 war veterans, about 100 war widows and about 43,000 war veteran widows in Romania.
President Iohannis underlines veterans exemplary behavior which represents a benchmark for the descendants
President Klaus Iohannis conveyed a message on Wednesday, on the occasion of the National Day of War Veterans, in which he underlined veterans’ “exemplary” behavior, which represents a benchmark for the descendants and urged them to protect themselves by observing the rules of social distancing, in the context of the novel coronavirus epidemic.
“Dear war veterans, we thank you for the manner in which, throughout wars and until today, you have overcome the difficult moments with dignity, offering us a model of spiritual strength and moral beauty. We are living a difficult period, in which, inspired from your experience, you should prove courage, responsibility and solidarity in order to overcome together, well, the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Honorable war veterans, I urge you to protect yourselves and your families, by observing the social distancing rules, in order to protect yourselves from the severe effects which the novel coronavirus infection can cause. We are next to you and I assure you of our full support,” the head of state says in a message occasioned by the National Day of War Veterans.
According to Iohannis, the “exemplary” behavior of the war veterans in times when they defended Romania’s freedom represents a benchmark for the descendants.
