President Klaus Iohannis will hold a new meeting on Friday, at 13:00 hrs, at the Cotroceni presidential Palace, concerning the assessment of the economic situation in the context of the crisis generated by the COVID-19 epidemic.
The meeting will be attended by Prime Minister Ludovic Orban, the governor of the National Bank of Romania, Mugur Isarescu, and the Minister of Public Finance, Florin Citu, informed the Presidential Administration.
The president also had a meeting in this format on May 8, to assess the economic situation in the context of the crisis caused by the COVID-19 epidemic. At the end of it, Klaus Iohannis declared that it is “clear” that Romania’s budget deficit will be higher than planned and will have to be financed.
“We discussed the economic situation, the budget situation, the general situation. We focused in this discussion, in the post-introduction part, on two topics – the first being the budget deficit. It is clear that we will have a larger deficit than it was initially planned (.. .) at the beginning of the year, and this deficit must be financed and we had a very good discussion to see what measures are feasible, what measures are required for the economic revival. (…) What we all want is to have a good funding for the deficit so that there is no need for additional austerity measures. We need very coherent measures that allow us to encourage this economy, which is currently in a special situation, in a crisis situation,” President Iohannis was saying at the time, according to Agerpres.
