Abai Kunanbaev is a great poet, composer, philosopher and founder of written literature in Kazakhstan, as well as a reformer of culture in the spirit of rapprochement with European culture based on enlightened Islam.
He had a great impact on the Kazakh national intellectuals who appeared in the late nineteenth century – early twentieth century. In his record record there are a lot of songs, 170 poems and 56 translations.
Abai’s famous work was the prosaic poem “Қара сөз” (literally translated “Simple (literally – black) spoken”), consisting of 45 short parables or philosophical treatises. In these “masterpieces” arise the issues of history, pedagogy, morality and ethnic rights of Kazakhs.
In honor of Abai’s 175th birthday, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, published an article – “Abai and Kazakhstan in the 21st Century”, in which he shared his thoughts on the relevance of Abai’s work for the current generations and what conclusions the Kazakh people should draw from the poet’s works.
“Knowing Abay is knowing yourself. And self-knowledge, along with continuous development and education, provides wisdom. This is the recipe of the intellectual nation. In this sense, it is obvious that Abai’s words should become a point of reference for generations “, the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated.
