President Klaus Iohannis on Wednesday made a new call for compliance with health protection rules, as there were “worrying” figures regarding cases of coronavirus infection, but new relaxation measures were also adopted.
“Unfortunately, today we have recorded new worrying figures both as regards the new cases of infection, and especially the number of deaths and the number of people admitted to intensive care wards. I want to extend my condolences to the families grieving by the loss of their loved ones. In the context of new relaxation measures adopted since 1 September, such as the resumption of cultural activities and the reopening of restaurants, as well as the upcoming start of the school year, I make a new appeal: dear Romanians, continue to be responsible! The virus, in the absence of a vaccine, has only one barrier: the care of each person and those around them,” the president said in a press conference at the Cotroceni Palace.
The head of state accused again the Social Democratic Party (PSD) that, in the context of efforts to combat the effects of the pandemic, it is trying to sabotage and obstruct, describing the situation at the debate on the PSD’s motion of censure, where the working quorum was not met, as ridiculous. He expressed his hope that the PSD members would take this lesson seriously. He made a new call for accountability in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“There are some who instead of being part of the construction effort are just trying to sabotage and hinder. I mean PSD. We witnessed a situation on Monday that was ridiculous. Those who initiated the motion were not able to ensure the presence of their own parliamentarians in the hall. It is cynical and irresponsible to file a motion of censure amid all these efforts to combat the pandemic. After the failure of Monday, I wonder to whom served this situation of a PSD that simply cannot control its thirst for power. What can Romanians expect from a party that acts only for its own members? I thank the parties that did not join these strictly electoral interests “, Iohannis declared.
He expressed his hope that the PSD members would take this lesson seriously.
“In Romania, politics can no longer be done by pursuing only small party stakes. Some PSD leaders are inducing the idea of submitting a new motion. Stop these cynical games that only cause distrust. The health crisis we are going through generated chain reactions that showed the institutional failure of this way of doing politics, specific to the last 30 years, patented by PSD “, Iohannis pointed out.
