President Iohannis: Victory in local elections belongs, first of all, to Romanian democracy, also right-wing victory

President Klaus Iohannis declared on Monday that the victory in the local elections belongs to the Romanian democracy, pointing out that it was also a victory for the right-wing.

“Following the local elections, the victory belongs, first of all, to the Romanian democracy. At the same time, it was a victory of the right-wing. Thus, a new political reality has taken shape, the one in which PNL (the National Liberal Party) and USR (Save Romania Union) become the forces of change for the better, and PSD (the Social Democratic Party) joins the Opposition with one of the worst results,” the head of state said in a statement at the Cotroceni presidential Palace.

” It is a wave that started with the referendum on justice that we convened last year, which continued with the fall of the PSD government and then with the vote in the presidential elections. For the National Liberal Party, it is a historic score, the best electoral performance in the last 30 years. Congratulations, you are the largest party in Romania today, you have gained credibility through work and the responsibility with which you have assumed the management of the worst crisis that Romania is going through. The vote that the Romanians gave you yesterday also shows that the successful liberal administrations are examples that people want to take over in as many localities as possible. For USR-PLUS, a young team at the beginning of the road is also a very good score. Congratulations, you have proved that perseverance and well-prepared projects can strengthen you as a party and ensure you an important place on the political scene, ”Iohannis said.

The president said the local elections were held in very special conditions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I want to emphasize that everything I saw on Sunday at the polling stations was an exemplary mobilization. The voting process went smoothly and we have a new example that when the authorities act responsibly, the results are visible. I thank all the citizens who went to the polls yesterday. Your contribution makes democracy strong and good. We had a good turnout, especially since we are in a health crisis. The involvement of each of us regarding our future will transform our country into the one we want “, said the president.
