Romania’s Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu will have consultations in Washington on Monday with the US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, as part of a visit to the US by the Romanian official at the invitation of his American counterpart.
Organized in the context of celebrating, in 2020, 140 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Romania and the US, the visit is a good opportunity to reconfirm the main coordinates of the Strategic Partnership, as well as to assess the status and prioritization of projects of common interest, reflecting strong commitment of the two countries for the extension and deepening of all dimensions of the Strategic Partnership.
According to Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the talks between Minister Bogdan Aurescu and Secretary of State Pompeo will focus on bilateral cooperation in the political, military, energy and economic fields, including the priority strategic interconnection projects promoted by Romania within the Three Seas Initiative.
Minister Bogdan Aurescu will also highlight, in the discussions with the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the objective, of great importance for the Romanian citizens, of our country’s accession to the Visa Waiver Program.
Regional developments will also be addressed, with a focus on the Black Sea region and security on NATO’s Eastern Flank, as well as other topics of interest on the international agenda, the Foreign Ministry also informs.
“The Strategic Partnership between Romania and the United States occupies a central place, being one of the three fundamental pillars of the architecture of our country’s foreign and security policy, and its development and deepening, in all its dimensions, are objectives assumed at the most high level. During the consultations I will have with the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, we will pragmatically evaluate the Strategic Partnership stage, starting from the concrete objectives established by the Joint Declaration of the Presidents of Romania and the USA, of August 20, 2019, adopted during President Klaus Iohannis’s visit to Washington, and which, through our joint effort, strong commitment and political will, have been largely achieved. At the same time, we will prioritize the main projects of common interest on the agenda, including the structured preparation of the 7th meeting of the Romania-US Strategic Dialogue, planned for next year, when we will celebrate 10 years since the adoption of the Joint Declaration on The Strategic Partnership for the 21st Century “, Minister Bogdan Aurescu stated before the visit.
The visit will also include meetings with other US officials, as well as representatives of American think tanks.
