GCS: 5.719 new COVID-19 cases in Romania in the last 24 hours after 34.343 test carried out nationwide

A number of 5,719 new cases of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 have been recorded in the past 24 hours, following the performance of 34,343 tests at national level, the Strategic Communication Group (GCS) informs on Wednesday.

These are cases that have not previously had a positive test, says GCS.

As of Wednesday, 654,007 cases of people infected with the novel coronavirus have been confirmed in Romania. Of these, 586,764 people were declared cured.

At the national level, 4,902,726 tests have been processed to date. Of these, 34,343 have been performed in the past 24 hours, 22,072 based on the case definition and medical protocol and 12,271 upon request.


1,070 patients in intensive care; hospitalized persons – 8,847


A number of 8,847 people with COVID-19 are hospitalized in specialized health units, of whom 1,070 in intensive care, the Strategic Communication Group (GCS) informed on Wednesday.

In Romania, as many as 26,141 people confirmed with the novel coronavirus infection are in isolation at home, and 8,711 are in institutional isolation.

Also, 40,672 people are in quarantine at home, and 47 in institutionalized quarantine.


Another 121 deaths due SARS-CoV-2 virus


Another 121 deaths have been registered in the past 24 hours due to the novel coronavirus, the Strategic Communication Group (GCS) reported on Wednesday.

GCS shows that 116 of the registered deaths are of some patients who presented comorbidities, for 2 deceased patients no comorbidities were registered, and for 3 deceased patients no comorbidities have been reported so far.

So far, 16,299 people diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection have died in Romania since the beginning of the pandemic.


728 people retest positive for SARS-CoV-2


A number of 728 people retested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the Strategic Communication Group (GCS) reported on Wednesday.

“Apart from the newly confirmed cases, following the retesting of patients who had already tested positive, 728 people were reconfirmed positive,” GCS said.


Number of Romanians abroad with COVID-19 goes up to 7,115


The number of Romanians abroad confirmed with the novel coronavirus increases to 7,115, and that of deaths to 132, the Strategic Communication Group (GCS) reported on Wednesday.

As of January 5, 2021, 17,348,389 cases have been reported in the EU/EEA, the United Kingdom, Monaco, San Marino, Switzerland, Andorra. Most cases have been reported in France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain and Germany.

Globally, there are 80,316,555 confirmed cases, 1,770,695 dead and 48,466,498 cured.


Bucharest, in the lead with most new cases, most cases countrywide


The areas with the most newly confirmed cases of infection with SARS-CoV-2 compared to the last report are Bucharest – 944 and the counties of Timis – 385, Iasi – 358, Constanta – 293, Ilfov – 292, Cluj – 229, according to data transmitted on Wednesday by the Strategic Communication Group (GCS).

Moreover, the most cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection have been recorded, since the beginning of the pandemic and until now, in Bucharest – 104,762, followed by the counties of Cluj – 30,827 and Iasi – 28,168, the GCS informs.

The counties with a large number of cases are Timis – 27,107, Constanta – 27,085, Brasov – 25,873, Ilfov – 25,137 and Prahova – 24,365.
