NN paid over 14 million lei in 5 years for medical services needed by health insurance customers

  • Health concerns are more current and common than ever, and the atypical context of the past year has increased the relevance of insurance that people can rely on in unforeseen medical situations.
  • Launched 5 years ago, on World Health Day, NN Health Insurance today helps over 27,000 Romanians to take care of their health.
  • NN Health Insurance customers don’t need to worry about the costs for hospitalization and surgery when treated in the NN network, which includes over 250 hospitals and private clinics in Romania and abroad. And when they choose out-of-network hospitals, including public hospitals, they receive the equivalent of the costs and can then use the amounts according to their own priorities.
  • In total, NN Asigurari de Viata was there for its clients and paid Health Insurance benefits of almost 3 million euros since 2016.

 

In Romania, 79.5% of health expenses are financed from public sources, according to the latest OECD State of Health in the EU report, the rest being direct payments made by patients. People choose to be treated outside the public health system, in private, where they support costs from their own pocket. A private health insurance can alleviate the financial pressure generated by medical expenses. With an average of only 5 lei per day, NN Health Insurance customers can benefit from 100,000 lei per year for necessary treatments, an amount that increases by 20,000 lei after each year in which the insurance wasn’t needed, to maximum 200,000 lei. The cost of insurance depends mainly on age and does not increase from one year to another if there are medical problems for which the insurance was used.

“Health insurance is the alternative through which we have money at our disposal for unforeseen medical expenses. Through NN Health Insurance, we paid a total of 14 million lei so far directly to the hospital or clinic in our network where clients were treated or to them if they chose a medical center outside the network. We offer this flexibility because clients have told us over time that in order to solve health problems they first trust especially the doctors and then the place where they practice. The insurance can be purchased through a digital process, based on an online discussion with one of the 1,500 colleagues in the sales team. We brought the sales process to the current reality and we were there for customers in this atypical context that put everyone’s health to the test. Thus, exceptionally, we paid on average 4,000 lei to clients who have so far needed hospitalization for diseases caused by coronavirus”, said Gabriela Lupas-Ticu (photo), Chief Marketing & Operations Officer at NN Asigurari de Viata.

Since launch, most customers have benefited from their NN Health Insurance in happy times, such as the birth of a child. Other common reasons were health problems specific to women, septal deviation corrections, fractures or surgery for appendicitis or gallbladder, with covered medical expenses ranging from 3,500 to 8,500 lei, depending on the case. In terms of hospitalization cases for which the insurance was used, the main reasons were enteroviruses and respiratory diseases, mainly affecting children, with an average of 4.000 lei for necessary medical expenses.

During these 5 years, NN Health Insurance proved to be a real support even in serious situations, which involved high costs. The most complex procedure covered was a surgery determined by a cancer diagnosis, with expenses of almost 94,000 lei. At the same time, for a surgical intervention that involved an extended hospitalization period of 19 days, the total expenses covered by the insurance exceeded 68,000 lei.

Between 2016 and 2020, the number of Romanians who have a health insurance increased by over 60%, while the total premiums paid by them recorded double-digit annual growth, reaching 451 million lei at the end of last year, according to Financial Supervisory Authority data. NN Asigurari de Viata is the fourth largest insurer in terms of gross premiums written in 2020 for health insurance, with a share of over 10% of total calculated based on data reported by the Financial Supervisory Authority, and currently has over 27,000 beneficiaries. The Romanian market is small compared to other European countries, but trends show that people increasingly feel the need for viable financial alternatives when it comes to health issues.

“Since the outbreak of the pandemic, we have seen greater interest in health insurance and more proactivity in a direction that was often not a priority for us. The trend is supported by a better understanding of the benefits and digitalization of the access to insurance, but also by the constant development of the private medical infrastructure in Romania. About 35% of all our new customers in 2020 have chosen Health Insurance for themselves and their families and the trend continues this year. Also, 18% of the purchased health insurance was for children, an important advantage we offer to parents being the fact that they can be hospitalized with their child at no extra cost. Health insurance is a key segment in our development strategy, so we are constantly concerned with improving the product, aiming to increase customer satisfaction and provide an experience that makes a difference”, says Gerke Witteveen, NN Asigurari de Viata interim Chief Executive Officer.

In addition to hospitalization and surgery in the event of an accident or illness, included in the insurance as main benefits, clients can also access the optional prevention benefit, which offers more services in tens of REGINA MARIA clinics across the country, as part of NN Asigurari de Viata’s partnership with the Health network. Clients benefit exclusively in the Regina Maria Health Network from a complete annual medical check-up, up to 12 general or specialized check-ups and discounts between 20% and 70% for check-ups or investigations that exceed the benefits covered, depending on the type of package chosen – Standard, Medium or Advanced. During the five years, the clients who also chose the prevention package benefited from a total number of over 124,000 investigations, of which approximately 70% are laboratory tests, followed by medical check-ups and ultrasounds.
