IntMin Bode, US charge d’affaires interim address visas issue, fight against corruption and human trafficking

The Minister of Interior, Lucian Bode, had, on Tuesday, at the Interior Ministry (MAI) headquarters, a meeting with David Muniz, US ad interim chargé d’affaires in Bucharest, with the two officials addressing several topics, among which police cooperation with the FBI, the fight against corruption and human trafficking, but also Romania’s efforts to be included in the Visa Waiver Program.

According to an MAI release, the meeting is part of a series of regular meetings between the two officials, in the context of consolidating the strategic bilateral relationship.

On this occasion, topics of common interest were discussed, such as police cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the fight against organized crime, with a special emphasis on combating human trafficking.

Another topic addressed was related to the fight against corruption, the Romanian official emphasizing the permanent concern of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for improving the normative framework and the necessary tools for preventing and combating corruption.

At the same time, Lucian Bode referred to the latest report of the European Commission on the evolution of the situation in Romania within the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism, which highlights the positive trends registered by the Romanian state on this level, progress welcomed by the US side.

The agenda of the discussions also included the file of Romania’s inclusion in the Visa Waiver Program, the Romanian side reiterating the determination of the authorities to continue the efforts aiming at Romania’s accession in the program.
