Romania´s national rugby team – “the Oaks” will play, on July 3, a test match against Los Pumas – Argentina´s squad, who made history last November by beating the All Blacks (New Zealand) for the first time in history.
Los Pumas return to Romania after 29 years. The last match played in Bucharest was in 1992.
This will be the ninth meeting between Romania and Argentina. The last one was ten years ago, in 2011, at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.
Argentina is currently in 8th place in the world rugby rankings, being the team with the most spectacular and highest value growth in the last 10 years.
In this summer’s European tournament, Argentina will play two more matches, with Wales, on July 10 and 17, in Cardiff.
Mario Ledesma, the head coach of the “Cougars”, has already announced the composition of the team that will play the matches in Europe, saying that he has put on the list both experienced players and players he aims to develop for the 2023 World Cup in France. He also confirmed the appointment of Julian Montoya as the team captain.
“We have just a few days to prepare for these matches, to harmonize and play our best rugby. We will have players coming from all over the world, with different training. We have to think about these parameters and how we will prepare for the Rugby Championship, “Ledesma said.
The stadium where the test match between Romania and Argentina will take place is to be established together with the EURO 2020 representatives and the Bucharest authorities and it will be announced as soon as possible.
This event takes place in collaboration with the Argentine Embassy, which facilitated both the Argentine national team entry and stay on the territory of Romania, as well as the transport of sports equipment.
