10,830 students from Romania headed to the United Kingdom to pursue higher education during the 2019/20 academic year, while the country saw an increase of 56 percent in the number of Romanian students within six academics years, according to official numbers.
A total of 6,940 Romanians were enrolled at British universities and colleges in the 2014/15 academic year, which number increased to 10,830 in 2019/20, the education search platform Erudera.com reports.
The group of 10,830 Romanian students was settled in the following UK countries:
- 10,055 students in England
- 430 in Scotland
- 325 in Wales
- 20 in Northern Ireland
During the same academic year (2019/20), the majority of Romanian students (1,325) were enrolled at the University of Bedfordshire. Whereas other institutions which hosted more Romanian students include:
- University of Suffolk – 595 students
- Coventry University – 555 students
- The University of Manchester – 420 students
- University College London – 300 students
- Anglia Ruskin University – 275 students
Last academic year, an increase of 9.7 percent was also marked in the number of Romanians studying in the UK, compared to a year earlier.
Gent Ukëhajdaraj from Erudera says that this increase in student numbers shows that the UK education system is highly valued by Romanian students. He added that more Romanian students choosing the UK as their study abroad destination could be related to the employment opportunities that come after studying in the UK.
“According to data, students who have completed higher studies at any of the UK universities and colleges are among the most employed in a global level. This could be one of the main reasons why there is a steep increase in the number of Romanians studying in the UK over the recent years,” Ukëhajdaraj emphasized.
Ukëhajdaraj further highlighted that starting in September 2021, new Romanian students and those from other EU countries enrolled at UK universities will not be eligible for home fee status or student loans. Instead, every UK University will regulate its own fees for EU students.
Each year, international students, including Romanian students, explore various areas of study, with the most popular major being business. There are over 43 prestigious business schools and universities across the United Kingdom where students can receive business degrees as well as adequate preparation for the labor market.
The UK is the number one choice for international students in Europe and the number two worldwide. Every year, the country becomes the home of thousands of international students. Last year, more than 500,000 international students moved to the UK to pursue their higher studies.
