The first edition of KATHE, AKANA! International Roma Theatre Festival presents on 30 August to 6 September, theatre shows and cine-Theatre shows, recent creations and premieres conceived and staged by professional Roma artists from Austria, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, and Ucraine. Alex Fifea, the artistic director of the festival, Roma playwright, actor and director, together with Rodrigo Balogh (Hungary), Mihaela Dragan (Romania) and Andrei Serban (Romania) have put together the festival selection of shows.
According to a press release issued by the organizers, KATHE, AKANA! is a cultural platform to present, represent, bridge and start a dialogue to promote cultural diversity, non-discrimination, access to culture and cultural education in order to combat the negative stereotypes on Roma.
“We want to give a voice to Roma through theatre and culture. There is a need to know and acknowledge each others, Roma and non-Roma, in order to reconcile our historic cultural differences. We put together a selection of shows that centre around current themes and aesthetics rooted in documenting the reality and micro-history“, says Alex Fifea, KATHE, AKANA! artistic director and he continues:
“KATHE, AKANA! has a clear social messaging on education, awareness, and reinforcing a positive identity, and their cultural diversity about and with Roma is working towards harmonising things inside the Roma communities, as well as outside, between the non-Roma majority and the Roma communities“, concludes Fifea.
