Citu: Football is played for goals, politics for votes. Discussions with USRPLUS can resume after their congress

The chairman of the National Liberal Party (PNL), Prime Minister Florin Citu, talked, on Sunday, of the possibility for Ludovic Orban supporters to be part of the new leadership team of the party, that “football is played for goals, politics for votes.”

“I want to say that football is played for goals, politics for votes and we will see what happens. If they have the necessary votes, of course,” said Citu before the start of the National Council of the party, convened to elect the other leadership positions in the party.

Discussions with USRPLUS can resume after their congress

The discussions with the Save Romania Union – Party of Liberty, Unity and Solidarity (USR PLUS) can be resumed after the congress of this party, after the new leadership is established, and after they will no longer be in alliance with the Social Democrat Party (PSD) and the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), said, on Sunday, the chairman of the National Liberal Party (PNL), Prime Minister Florin Citu.

“We cannot know clearly who we’re discussing with, because we don’t know clearly, but we’ll wait for them. If, after that, the new leadership is no longer in alliance with AUR and PSD, we can discuss. If they remain in an alliance with AUR and PSD, that’s it,” said Citu at Romexpo, at the PNL’s National Council.

He was asked about an eventual government reshuffle and the renegotiation of Govenment portfolios, if USR PLUS remains in government.

“Firstly, the USR must get rid of the alliance with PSD and AUR, after that they can come to the table with us. If you’re speaking of a more ample discussion, we can discuss in the party as well, but at this time, these discussions are not taking place. At this time, we are governing in the situation we’re in, we are governing with these interim ministers, there’s projects that we have in the governing programme, with which we move forward. Some of them were accelerated, others were delayed until now. We accelerate, we move forward. We will see, after the USR PLUS decides who their chairman will be, the new leadership, we’ll discuss. If the new leadership wants to get rid of AUR and PSD…,” Citu said.

On Saturday, Florin Citu won the chairmanship of the National Liberal party with 2,878 votes to his opponent, Ludovic Orban’s 1,898 votes.

Furthermore, Daniel Buda was elected chair of the Court of Arbitration by 2,381 votes, and Mihai Barbu – chairman of the National Review and Censors’ Committee with 3,808 votes.

We will discuss with who will support Gov’t in Parliament, don’t want political crisis

The chairman of the National Liberal Party (PNL), Prime Minister Florin Citu, stated on Sunday, referring to the way in which he will manage to still govern, that he will discuss with all parliamentary parties that don’t desire a political crisis in Romania, mentioning that he prefers the option of PNL joining the Save Romania Union – Party of Liberty, Unity and Solidarity (USR PLUS) and the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) and the national minorities.

“We will discuss with all those in the Romanian Parliament that will support a government and don’t want a political crisis in Romania (…) With all parties. On the one hand, we have the USR, which is negotiating with PSD [Social Democrat Party] and AUR [Alliance for the Union of Romanians], and then you have no options, we don’t negotiate with anyone (…) At this time, we have a PSD-AUR-USR alliance in the Romanian Parliament, which wants to oust the Government. Mathematically, I told you my preference and I say that the variant that has the best chances is the one in which we continue with a PNL-USR-UDMR Government and minorities’ votes. That’s what I want, what I will fight for, what I’ll negotiate in the Romanian Parliament. As long as USR maintains its opinion that it wants to take down the Government, together with AUR and PSD, it’s complicated to discuss with them. After they decide if they want to be with PSD and AUR still, then we’ll talk to them,” said Citu.
