The Save Romania Union (USR) has submitted, on Tuesday, in the plenum of the Chamber of Deputies, a simple motion against Justice Minister Catalin Predoiu.
The announcement was made by USR deputy Stelian Ion, a former Justice Minister himself.
“Please allow me to announce, in the plenum of the Chamber of Deputies, the submission of the simple motion titled ‘Again with the tank over Justice – Minister Catalin Predoiu,” Stelian Ion said.
“After the massacre done by PSD-ALDE-UDMR [Social Democratic Party – Alliance of Liberals and Democrats – Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania] on Justice, after last year all reform draft laws in justice were sabotaged from the inside by the UDMR, with the two-faced complicity of some PNL [National Liberal Party] leaders and especially President Iohannis, we are now at the stage where Dragnea’s work is completed by Klaus Iohannis, and the role of Florin Iordache is taken over by Catalin Predoiu. (…) Catalin Predoiu, PNL, Iohannis played the role of defenders of independent justice, so that later they could turn around and ally themselves with those whom they criticized fiercely. And not only did they ally, but they showed everyone that the laws promoted by the PSD were also convenient to them,” shows the simple motion.
USR claims that the Department for Investigating Crimes in Justice (SIIJ) was replaced “with a similar mechanism, but more toxic.”
According to the initiators, “Catalin Predoiu will remain in the history of justice in Romania as being the minister that has reached the peak in creating special categories: special corrupt people, which cannot be investigated by the DNA [National Anticorruption Directorate], nor by specialized prosecutors’ offices,” and the reorganization of SIIJ proposed by the minister “is contrary to the notifications from the Venice Commission and their recommendations, as well as the CVM and GRECO reports.”
Furthermore, the motion also mentions that Predoiu is the holder of the most mandates of Justice Minister after 1989 and, theoretically, has influenced justice the greatest. In the opinion of the USR, “Five and a half years spent already as Justice Minister have not tied Catalin Predoiu’s name to any courageous method of reform in Justice.”
USR also accuses Predoiu that, under his leadership, the whistleblower law, which should have been adopted by December 17 to avoid infringement procedures, was kept at the Ministry, and the Working Group at the Justice Ministry established to draft the bill on a National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) for forests was abandoned.
