Crown Custodian Margareta visits Isaccea border crossing point: Romania is an example in terms of the support granted to the Ukrainian refugees

Romania is an example in terms of the support granted to the Ukrainian refugees, Romanian Crown Custodian, Her Majesty Margareta, Romanian Red Cross President, said during a visit at the Isaccea border crossing point in Tulcea County.

The Crown Custodian appreciated the manner in which the Romanian authorities have organised and voiced pride in the civil society having intervened to support Ukrainian refugees.

“I find it well organised. I am very proud of what Romanians are doing, that they have opened their arms and hearts. It is a beautiful and necessary thing. It will last in time, and this is the problem. (…) It is a worldwide effort we are making now, nonetheless Romania has acted exemplarily and I am very proud. But we must make an effort in time,” Her Majesty Margareta said, according to Agerpres.

Her Majesty also mentioned the involvement of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), whose ad-interim representative in Romania, Pablo Zapata, participates in the coordination of support efforts for people leaving Ukraine.

We are here to discuss with the authorities and work together, to coordinate the efforts of the UN family who has varied and specialised capacities and we are putting them at Romania’s disposal. Our common goal is to support the refugees, said Pablo Zapata, who was also present at Isaccea on Thursday.

Romanian Red Cross Director General Silviu Ioan Lefter mentioned that round 50 trucks with aids had already reached Ukraine over the past three weeks, being sent from member associations from all over the world of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

“At the end of the week, the President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies with whom we shall establish a more fluent working manner. He will also connect with the authorities in Ukraine, and maybe we’ll also open other corridors,” Silviu Ioan Lefter mentioned.

Her Majesty Margareta and His Royal Highness Prince Radu have been in Tulcea County since Wednesday, where they also met with representatives of the local branch of the Union of Ukrainians from Romania and Romanian Red Cross volunteers.

According to the Coast Guard, about 36,000 people, of whom almost 31,000 Ukrainians have transited the Isaccea border crossing point since February 24.
