EduMin: School year to have 5 learning modules and 5 vacations, we intend to give up mid term exams

Minister of Education Sorin Cimpeanu announced on Wednesday that the school year 2022 – 2023 will have five learning modules and five school holidays, the intention being to give up the mid term exams.

“It is about the need to alternate learning modules of 6, 7, 8 weeks with rest modules. This way we can adapt to the specificity of the school year in Romania,” Sorin Cimpeanu declared, after the Government meeting.

He specified that, according to the agreed proposal, the school year will start on September 5 with a first learning module.

“After a period of a few weeks, on October 24, pupils and preschoolers would go on vacation. October 24-30 would be the first recess,” Cimpeanu said.

According to the Minister of Education, the second learning module will run until around the winter holidays, when the second holiday will start, from December 23 until January 8.

The third learning module will begin on January 9.

“For the first time, this module will run until February, when we will have the third vacation, which can be granted in the second week, in the third or in the fourth week of February, at the decision of each county inspectorate, through consultation with those involved. This is a week-long, mobile holiday in February,” Sorin Cimpeanu explained.

The fourth module will run until around Easter.

“The holiday is set to be organized between April 8 and 23,” the education minister added.

In the school year 2022 – 2023, the fifth learning module will run until June 16, and the summer vacation will begin on June 17 and end on the first Monday in September.

Sorin Cimpeanu mentioned that the introduction of the “Green School” program, which will be included in the 4-5th learning modules, was also approved.

“Schools will have the freedom to choose, depending on the weather conditions and other local specificities, to hold ‘Green Week’ in module 4 and ‘School in a Different Way” in module 5 or vice versa. (…) We will introduce in schools presentations made by staff who are authorized to present these environment-related elements in a very attractive way. We plan other such actions for the introduction of specialists in schools, for example Financial Education,” said the Minister of Education, according to Agerpres.

He also announced that the giving up the mid term exams is being taken into account.

According to minister Cimpeanu, the textbooks will be changed and will be available in digital format, and the averages will be completed at the end of the school year.
