The meeting of the National Council of the National Liberal Party (PNL) in which elections for the positions of general secretary, first vice-president in the field of political strategies and vice-president in the field of defence and national security take place, started on Friday in Poiana Brasov.
The meeting is attended by 790 delegates, according to PNL interim secretary general Lucian Bode.
The Minister of Energy, Virgil Popescu, on Friday withdrew his candidacy from the position of first vice-president in the field of political strategies.
“I kept thinking. It was not at all easy to register for the race against Dan Motreanu, a friend with whom I campaigned, some I won, some I lost. I think it is better for Dan to be part of the party leadership. He is an older than me, he has always been at the reins of the PNL. (…) Please accept that I withdraw my candidacy,” said Virgil Popescu.
The announcement was received with applause by PNL delegates to the National Council.
Dan Motreanu, Member of the European Parliament, remained in the race for the position of First Vice President in the field of political strategies.
Also, Ben Oni Ardelean and Sorin Moldovan withdrew their candidacies for the position of vice president in the field of defence and national security, and Virgil Guran and Vergil Chitac remained in the race.
Lucian Bode – Minister of Internal Affairs, is running for the position of General Secretary of the PNL.
The PNL Local Elected League took place in Poiana Brasov on Thursday.
PM Ciuca: We guarantee the stability of the coalition and we don’t give up any of the party principles
The PNL (National Liberal Party) leader, Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca, on Friday said that the Liberals guarantee the stability of the coalition and do not give up any of the party’s principles.
“The PNL has taken responsibility for governing in the most difficult times the country has gone through. For we have a history and we owe it to ourselves to build a future that is right for us and especially for our children. We must fulfill Romania’s development and modernization. We have taken on the responsibility of managing exceptional situations unprecedented in Romania’s recent history and we have successfully met the challenges we face. PNL will take the initiative in what the public policies are concerned and it will bring them in the coalition. We must prove that we are serious and that we bring solid policies for continued development in the coalition, policies for entrepreneurs, in support of the entrepreneurs, policies to protect jobs, as well as policies through which we show concern for all citizens of Romania. We guarantee the stability of the coalition and we won’t give up any of the Liberal principles, we need to make them consistent through public policy. I am certain that PNL will overcome any present and future obstacle appeared in its way towards the second modernization of Romania,” said Ciuca, at the National Council of the PNL in Poiana Brasov.
“Today’s elections are extremely important for us, the Liberals, as we complete and finalize the party’s leadership team, a team that together with you, with all the PNL members, will strive to implement the party’s programme. Thus, (…) In order to gain the trust of the electorate, we must rely on the principles of meritocracy, representativeness, the criteria of political competence, integrity and professionalism. PNL is a performance-oriented, ambitious party and has a duty to undertake reforms to reduce the gap between Romania and the rest of Europe,” Ciuca said, according to Agerpres.
He said that the PNL is a factor of stability in the current context of conjugate crises. The Prime Minister also underscored the importance of Romania’s membership in the EU and NATO.
Dan Motreanu is elected first vice-president of PNL, Lucian Bode secretary general, Virgil Guran vice-president
On Friday, MEP Dan Motreanu was elected by the National Council of the PNL (National Liberal Party), in the position of first vice-president in the field of political strategies, the Minister of Interior, Lucian Bode, in the position of general secretary of the party, and Senator Virgil Guran as vice-president in the field of national defence and security.
Dan Motreanu scored 736 votes “in favour.” Five votes were cancelled.
Lucian Bode scored 606 votes “in favour,” and 40 were cancelled.
Virgil Guran received 459 votes “in favour,” while his opponent, Vergil Chitac – 129. A total of 50 votes were cancelled.
PNL showed maturity today, internal struggles ended
The chairman of the National Liberal Party (PNL), Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca, declared on Friday, at central Poiana Brasov (Brasov County), that the time for “internal struggles” has ended, in the context of filling in the party’s leadership team in the National Council, and liberals have shown signs of “maturity”.
“From this moment, we can have a perspective for everything that we proposed to accomplish, by promoting PNL’s public policies within the governing coalition and I consider this a very important moment to highlight that the aspect of internal struggles within PNL have ended, just as president Klaus Werner Iohannis said three days ago, at Vila Florica, when we celebrated PNL’s day, that the time for internal struggles has ended, I will join in and also say today that PNL has shown signs of maturity and the time for internal struggles has ended. In this complete formula, the PNL team shows solidarity and gives out a signal of teamwork, for all that our commitment means in the service of the Romanian people,” Ciuca said, during a press conference, at the end of PNL’s National Council.
According to him, through the resolution adopted within the meeting, “PNL will promote strengthening ties with intellectuals, the professional area, the academia, civil society”.
“We will be able to receive the message from all Romanian citizens, in order to have concrete and real observations, to focus our energy and expertise and to continue the process of modernizing Romania,” Nicolae Ciuca said.
He added that PNL took it upon itself to be the “advocate” for the diaspora.
“We made the decision that at the level of each PNL branch to have structures specialized for Romanians in the diaspora. At the level of county councils, led by PNL chairpersons, special offices will function which will handle the problems of the Romanian people in the diaspora,” Ciuca mentioned.
MEP Dan Motreanu was elected on Friday by the PNL’s National Council as senior deputy chairman within the political strategies, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Lucian Bode, as Party Secretary General, and senator Virgil Guran as deputy chairman in the area of defence and national security.
