The plenum of the Deputies Chamber on Wednesday adopted a legislative proposal that bannes participation in the presidential elections for such persons who are convicted by a court, at the date when they submit their candidacy.
The Plenum of the Chamber of Deputies adopted with 223 votes “in favour”, one “against” and 22 abstentions, the legislative proposal for the modification and completion of Law no. 370/2004 for the election of the President of Romania.
The Senate, as the first notified Chamber, rejected the legislative proposal in the meeting of November 20, 2017, and the Government said that the Parliament is the one that decides on the opportunity of its adoption.
Speaker Ciolacu: After adoption of “No convicts in public offices” initiative, gov’t is obliged to hold referendum
Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Marcel Ciolacu, stated on Wednesday that, after the “No convicts in public office” initiative will be adopted by the Senate, the Government is obliged to hold a referendum within 30 days.
He mentioned that he would recommend to the PSD (Social Democratic Party) group leader in the Senate to support the introduction of the initiative on the agenda.
