IntMin Bode: More than 7,000 criminal files for illicit drug use, illegal possession open in Romania 2021

Romania’s Interior Minister Lucian Bode said on Thursday that, in 2021, more than 7,000 criminal files were drawn up for illicit drug use, illegal possession of drugs and banned substances, and that the claim that the Interior Ministry was not actively present at the Saga Festival is false.

The statements were made as two young people died and several were rushed to the hospital as a result of drug use at the Saga Festival.

“There were 73,000 attendees, 129 criminal cases, 119 cases of drug use, illegal possession of drugs and banned substances – these are figures that say it all about the activity of the Interior Ministry in the three days. The claim that the Interior Ministry was not actively present in the event is false. We had over 400 staff a day during the three days of the festival,” Bode said.

He added that he ordered the Interior Ministry to come up “urgently” with a plan for the components of preventing and combating trafficking in and use of illegal drugs and other dangerous substances.

“Today at 10:00hrs, all the departments of the Interior Ministry with a responsibility in this area will convene together, and after the meeting we will establish measures on preventing and combating illicit drug trafficking and consumption. We will re-evaluate data collection activities, we will prepare additional MAI staff, we will establish a calendar of events with a large audience and there we will have an increased presence of MAI staff,” said Bode.

According to him, MAI in 2021 dismantled 52 criminal groups and sent over 1,600 people to court, while impounding 2.8 tonnes of drugs.

“In Constanta last year, 1.4 tonnes of heroin was impounded. It was the largest catch in the last 30 years and the second largest in the European Union. These figures speak of the activity of the MAI departments, but we are aware that we have not done enough, because we are talking about a scourge, we are talking about the fact that many occasional consumers become addicted, that’s why all state bodies must come together to contain this scourge,” said Bode, according to Agerpres.
