Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis on Monday sent a letter to his US counterpart Joseph Biden on US Independence Day, congratulating the American people, according to the Romanian Presidential Administration.
According to the quoted source, Iohannis mentioned the special context of this year, which witnessed multiple negative effects on security, and also the challenge against the values of the rule of law through the illegal, unjustified and unprovoked military aggression of the Russian Federation against the sovereign nation of Ukraine.
The chief of state also said that the world is now at a turning point in history, and the efforts of the US administration have been crucial in ensuring a strong and united response based on transatlantic unity and cooperation with like-minded global partners to Russia’s challenges to the rules-based international order. Iohannis assured that Romania will continue to be a stable ally and partner in this endeavour, committed to supporting transatlantic unity, regional stability, co-operation and strategic resilience.
In his message, Iohannis welcomed the steps that will lead to the commissioning for the first time of a nuclear power plant with small modular reactors (SMR) in Romania, one of the flagship projects of the Global Partnership for Infrastructure and Investments.
Continuing such joint efforts, Romania remains committed to strengthening Europe’s energy security, while respecting the highest standards of safety, nuclear security and non-proliferation, Iohannis is quoted as saying in the Romanian version of the letter.
He also mentioned the symbolic context of the 25th anniversary of the launch of the Strategic Partnership between Romania and the US and reaffirmed Romania’s commitment to strengthening excellent political and security co-operation, as well as the other dimensions of the strategic partnership for a strengthened transatlantic link. Iohannis mentioned the formats initiated and developed by Romania, together with the NATO on the eastern flank of the organisations, such as Bucharest 9 or the Three Seas Initiative, which bear witness to our Romania’s decision to strengthen Euro-Atlantic ties.
The chief of state also welcomed the adoption at the historic NATO summit in Madrid of a new strategic concept, as well as the results of collective defence, strengthening NATO’s deterrence defence posture on the eastern flank and the strategic importance of the Black Sea region for Euro-Atlantic security.
He also reiterated Romania’s gratitude for the decision announced by President Biden in Madrid to ramp up US military presence in Romania.
