Survey: Voluntary health insurance – the Romanians’ most sought coverage in 2022

Voluntary health insurance is the Romanians’ most sought coverage in 2022, followed by home and foreign travel insurance, as 4 in 10 Romanians (39 percent) report being more interested in the former type of policy, shows the latest UNSAR-IRES Barometer on Risk perception and insurance culture in Romania cited in an UNSAR release to Agerpres.

According to the said survey, Romanians are willing to pay extra to social health insurance for faster access to medical services and better quality thereof. Compared to 2021, the share of those willing to pay extra to benefit from quality services has increased for all medical services by more than 3 percentage points on average.

Surgery (79 pct), medical rehab (77 pct) and hospitalization (76 pct) remain the top three services for which Romanians are willing to pay more. Other medical services the respondents said they were interested in are lab tests, specialized outpatient service, medical imaging services, dental services, pediatrics, emergency medical services. Moreover, 43 percent of the respondents to the survey would access medical services in a public hospital on the basis of a voluntary health insurance, in case of services that are not settled by the public system.

“Voluntary health insurance is a concrete and quick solution to facilitate the Romanians’ access to certain categories of medical services. This type of insurance policy relieves the public system of certain expenses with medical services and at the same time contributes to increasing family protection in the event of financial imbalances caused by diseases or accidents,” said UNSAR director general Alexandru Ciuncan.

According to the data provided by the Financial Supervision Authority cited in the release, after the first three months of the current year, the financial protection offered to Romanians through voluntary health insurance is 28 percent higher compared to the same period of 2021.

The UNSAR-IRES barometer was conducted in May 2022 on a sample of 1,000 respondents aged 18 to 50, by the computer-assisted telephone interviewing method, with a maximum admissible error of ą 3.1 pct, and a confidence level of 95 pct.

Set up in 1994, the National Union of Romanian Insurers and Reinsurers (UNSAR) represents 20 companies with a share of approximately 90 percent of the local insurance market.

Established in 2009, the Romanian Evaluation and Strategy Institute – IRES operates on the Romanian research market as an independent think tank.
