Speech of H.E. Mr. Han Chunlin, the Chinese Ambassador to Romania at the National Day Online Celebration

On the occasion of the 73rd anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, I would like to, on behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Romania, extend cordial greetings to the Chinese compatriots in Romania and express my heartfelt thanks to friends from all walks of life who have long cared for and supported the development of China and China-Romania relations.

Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China on 1 October, 1949, hundreds of millions of Chinese people have overcome immense hardships and made generations of tremendous efforts, and achieved remarkable successes in the national development. Especially since 2012, under the strong leadership of President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government, new historic achievements have been made in the Chinese path to modernization. The Chinese nation has ushered in a great leap from gaining independence to growing rich to becoming strong.

In the past decade, high-quality development has taken new steps. The gross domestic product has exceeded one hundred trillion yuan, and the per capita GDP has surpassed 10,000 US dollars. The comprehensive national strength has leaped to a new level. As the world’s second largest economy and consumer market, the largest country in manufacturing, commodity trade and foreign exchange reserves, with enhanced resilience and sustainability in its economy, China is playing an increasingly important role in the global economy. Fully implementing five key development concepts, namely innovation, balanced growth, a green economy, opening-up, and inclusive development, China is fostering a new development pattern of “dual circulation”, in which domestic and foreign markets reinforce each other, and is promoting high-quality development.

In the past decade, people’s living standards have been improved in an all-round way. China has achieved a complete victory in its fight against poverty, and over 770 million of rural people have lifted themselves out of poverty. China has built a moderately prosperous society in all aspects, and achieved the first centenary goal on schedule. Committed to pursuing common prosperity, China has formed a middle-income population of over 400 million, and put in place the largest education, social insurance and health care systems in the world. With long-term social harmony and stability and high level of satisfaction of its people, China has been recognized as one of the safest and happiest countries.

In the past decade, China has demonstrated the responsibility of major stakeholder in its pursuit of major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics. Firmly committed to the path of peaceful development, China has formed a global partnership network by embracing the world and making friends extensively. China has signed “Belt and Road” cooperation documents with 149 countries and 32 international organizations, actively participated in international anti-pandemic cooperation, constructively promoted the political settlement of international and regional hotspot issues, played an important role in climate change, poverty reduction, anti-terrorism, and has made active efforts in safeguarding international energy and food security. Holding high the banner of true multilateralism, China has resolutely upheld the UN-centered international system, firmly defended fairness and justice, and gone all out to make global governance fairer and more equitable. President Xi Jinping proposed the Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative, offering China’s solutions and contributing China’s vision to solving problems facing mankind.

Despite the current turbulence in international situation, peace and development remain the themes of the times. China will always stand on the side of peace, and forge ahead at the forefront of development. We will follow the Chinese path to modernization to achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, and pursue high-quality development, thereby bringing new opportunities to the world. We will work tirelessly for building a community with a shared future for mankind, and make our due contribution to the progress of human civilization.

On October 16, 2022, the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China will be held in Beijing. This is a meeting of great importance convened at a critical moment, when China embarks on a new journey of fully building a modern socialist China and marching towards the second centenary goal. The meeting will comprehensively summarize the major achievements and valuable experience of China’s reform and development, set well-conceived goals, tasks and major policies of China’s development in the next five years and beyond, and will also give directions for China to make greater contributions to world peace and development.

This year also marks the 73rd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Romania. Over the 73 years, based on the principle of mutual respect and equal treatment, China-Romania relations have endured the test of international vicissitudes, and have always maintained stable development. The two countries joined hands to fight the pandemic and other difficulties, and our traditional friendship has proved to be firm and enduring. China-Romania trade volume has grown from nearly zero to over 10 billion US dollars last year. The scope of cooperation is constantly expanding, and our common interests are on the rise.

Since my arrival in Romania, I have been overwhelmed by the friendliness of the Romanian people through extensive meetings and visits. I truly feel that there is deep friendship between our peoples, high complementarity in our development, and huge potential for our cooperation. I look forward to working with friends from all walks of life in Romania to bring new fruits to our comprehensive, friendly and cooperative partnership, in the spirit of mutual benefit and common development, and make greater contributions to the benefits of the two countries and the two peoples.
