President Iohannis firmly rejects and unequivocally condemns the illegal annexation by Russia of Ukraine’s Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions. MAE: No territorial acquisition based on the violation of international law can be recognized

Today, I have joined the other members of the EU Council in adopting a common Statement to firmly reject and unequivocally condemn the illegal annexation by Russia of Ukraine’s Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis wrote on Twitter on Friday,  shortly after Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, declared the four Ukrainian regions Russian territories as part of the ceremonies which took place  in Moscow.

“EU, including Romania, does not and will never recognise the illegal “referenda” that Russia has organised in gross violation of Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty & territorial integrity. We call on all States and international organisations to reject this illegal annexation,” Iohannis stated.

He reiterates that the European Union, including Romania, firmly stands with Ukraine. “We will continue to provide strong economic, military, social and financial support to Ukraine,” Romania’s President added.

Ukraine has announced it will continue to fight to liberate these territories. Kyiv officials say the annexation lacks any legitimacy and represents Moscow’s reaction to the latest defeats on the frontline. The annexation will also probably lead to an escalation of the war, considering the Kremlin could claim that any attack on these regions will be an attack on a Russian territory. Russian forces are now controlling most of the Luhansk and Kherson regions, but only a few areas in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia, Radio Romania International reports.

Western powers say they will not recognize any of Russia’s declarations and threatened to introduce new sanctions. Romania has also condemned in strong terms the illegitimate referendums organized on the annexation of Ukrainian territories illegally occupied by Russian forces and said it does not recognize their results. The Romanian Foreign Ministry says Moscow is once again breaching fundamental principles of international law and is acting against its responsibilities as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

ForMin Aurescu: Illegal, illegitimate annexation of Ukrainian territories must be completely rejected by international community

The illegal and illegitimate annexation of the Ukrainian territories by Russia following the mock referendums and the illegal aggression must be completely rejected by the international community, the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu, wrote on Twitter on Friday.

“We condemn this act and all the aggravations and we reconfirm our firm support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” emphasized the head of Romanian diplomacy, on the online platform.

MAE: No territorial acquisition based on the violation of international law can be recognized

Romania reminds that “no territorial acquisition” based on the violation of international law can be recognized and reaffirms its “firm” support for the sovereignty of Ukraine, as well as for the territorial integrity of this state within its internationally recognized borders, shows a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) sent to AGERPRES on Friday.

According to the MAE, “Romania condemns in the strongest terms the signing of the so-called ‘accession agreements to the Russian Federation’ of some Ukrainian regions under the illegal occupation of Russian troops, as a result of the war of aggression launched by Russia against Ukraine”.

“These illegal and illegitimate ‘agreements’ are part of the Kremlin’s series of attempts to justify its illegal military occupation of territories belonging to another sovereign state and represent an irresponsible escalation of the current situation,” points out the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The MAE statement reads that “these actions cannot produce any kind of effect from the point of view of international law, and Romania does not recognize their validity, especially regarding the operation of any change regarding the territorial belonging of the Ukrainian regions targeted at Ukraine”.

“As in the case of the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol, the actions of the Russian Federation are based on the illegal use of force and represent serious violations of the most important principles and norms of international law, enshrined, in particular, by the provisions of the UN Charter. The Russian Federation acts contrary to all the responsibilities it should fulfill, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, which is the guarantor of international peace and security,” MAE also said.
