American Corner to open at Sibiu’s ASTRA Library

American Corner Sibiu, a public resource and information center that promotes the joint cultural and democratic values of the U.S. and Romania, will open in Sibiu on December 7 at the ASTRA Library.

This is the tenth center of the American Corners program running in the libraries of Bacau, Baia Mare, Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Constanta, Craiova, Iasi, Timisoara and Targu Mures.

The project is carried out with the support of the U.S. Embassy in Romania and the Sibiu County Council, the ASTRA Sibiu County Library said in a release on Tuesday.

The first public event of the series organized by the American Corner Sibiu and the ASTRA Sibiu County Library is The Transatlantic Literary Bridge/ Fiction and Poetry Talk/ from Sibiu to the U.S.A. – a dialogue between Sibiu-born writers Andrei Codrescu and Radu Vancu on literature and poetry at the confluence of millennia, in two different cultural spaces.

The American Corners program in Romania started in 2005, Agerpres informs.

The program aims to promote understanding and cooperation between the U.S. and Romania, providing accurate and diverse information about the United States regarding a series of topics that will contribute to the development of communication and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

“In addition to providing access to reliable and up-to-date information about the U.S. through printed and electronic resources, American Corner centers organize interactive cultural, educational and English language learning programs. American Corners offer a welcoming and inspiring environment, trained staff and the modern technologies necessary to create connections with Romanians, both in person and virtually, supporting the policies of the U.S. government, for a better understanding of American history and cultural values,” the release states.

The public’s access to the resources, services and programs offered by these centers is free.
