Italian, Spanish, Romanian Air Forces’ detachments to carry out enhanced Air Police mission

A ceremony dedicated to the certification of the detachments of the Italian Air Force and the Spanish Air Force, deployed in Romania to carry out the mission of the enhanced Air Police, took place on Friday, at the Lieutenant Aviator Gheorghe Mociornita 86th Air Base Borcea, in the presence of the minister of National Defense, Angel Tilvar, and the Chief of the Defense Staff, General Daniel Petrescu, a release from the Ministry of National Defence reads.

The National Defense minister emphasized, at the ceremony, that the presence of the Italian and Spanish military in Romania shows the solidarity and unity of action within the Alliance and will strengthen the interoperability between the allied forces.

“Italy was among the first allied countries that promptly responded to the need to adopt additional measures to strengthen vigilance on NATO’s eastern flank after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. The Italian pilots, together with their Romanian comrades, executed a series of complex protection missions of the Allied airspace in the Black Sea area during a very intense period from the point of view of military operations taking place in the vicinity of the Alliance’s maritime borders. Already on their third mission of the enhanced Air Police, the Italian military aviators already feel at home in the Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Force Base and I am certain that they will carry out their tasks successfully. Spain has also promptly joined these efforts to strengthen deterrence and defense measures on the Eastern border of the Alliance. After the previous air police mission carried out in our country in 2021, the Spanish military will work excellently with our military for the successful and maximum efficiency of the important tasks that will be entrusted to them here, in the air base,” Angel Tilvar said, according to Agerpres.

According to the source, the Italian and Spanish detachments deployed in Romania, equipped with Eurofighter aircraft, respectively F-18, will perform, together with the Romanian Air Force, enhanced Air Policing missions and missions within the concept enhanced Vigilance Activity under NATO command, for four months. The joint air police missions contribute to the development of the reaction and deterrence capacity, as well as to the consolidation of interoperability between the Italian, Spanish and Romanian air forces, the source added.
