National Defence Minister Angel Tilvar paid an official visit to the State of Qatar, March 12-14, at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs of the State of Qatar Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah, PhD, with the two officials having discussed the development of cooperation in the area of joint training, exchange of information and new technologies for defence.
According to a National Defence Ministry (MApN) press release issued on Wednesday, the stage and prospects of defence cooperation, including Qatar’s collaboration with the North Atlantic Alliance, were the topics of the meeting.
The two officials exchanged views on the international security situation, with unprecedented challenges to the Euro-Atlantic and global security architecture.
The Romanian Defence Minister pointed out that Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine has an impact both on the security and stability of Europe and the Middle East, highlighting the measures Romania has taken to manage its consequences. In this context, he referred to the support given to Ukrainian refugees or to the facilitation of grain exports from Ukraine.
The Romanian official also appreciated the role that Qatar plays in important conflict resolution processes in the Middle East and Africa.
At the same time, the two officials reiterated their commitment to continue the political-military dialogue and stressed the importance of a bilateral legal framework for cooperation in the defence area, which would allow the development of future comprehensive projects.
On the sidelines of the official meetings, the Romanian delegation participated in the presentation of the military capabilities of the National Security Academy of the State of Qatar, of the Joint Combat Training Centre and of the Special Operations Forces Centre, the MApN also points out in a release to Agerpres.
