Sorin Oprescu will be transferred from the Bucharest Police jail to Fundeni Hospital in order to undergo a series of medical tests and special investigations, after a lung nodule was discovered during previous investigations, giving rise to cancer suspicions, according to the mayor’s lawyers. The latter stated that Sorin Oprescu was informed on Thursday morning that his request to be transferred to Fundeni Hospital will be approved and he will undergo further medical tests and investigations. Previous medical investigations have showed that he suffers from 12 ailments, some of them serious, and a nodule was discovered in one of his lungs, the discovery raising suspicions about possible cancer.
Oprescu is under pre-trial detention for bribe taking.

The National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) says that in 2013-2015, a well organised ring, which Oprescu also joined, created inside the Bucharest public administration a system whereby business operators wanting to win contracts from public bodies operating under the authority of the mayor had to remit part of the gross profit from carrying out the contracts to decision makers in the mayor’s apparatus as bribe.
